New research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society suggests that the time people go to bed and the amount of time they sleep may affect their risk of developing dementia.
In the study of 1,982 older adults in China who were free of dementia at the start of the study, 97 participants were diagnosed with dementia during an average follow-up of 3.7 years.
Risk of dementia was 69% higher in those who slept for more than 8 hours (versus 7-8 hours) and 2-times higher for those who went to bed before 9 PM (versus 10 PM or later).
"This suggests that cognitive function should be monitored in older adults who report prolonged time in bed and advanced sleep timing," the authors wrote.

This is sleep time devoid of other obvious sickness or injury.

Wow, completely counter-intuitive. A health group I’ve been a member of has pushed 9-10 hours of sleep as the goal.

I wonder if those who went to sleep earlier and slept longer did so because they were generally less busy and involved in things.

I average 6.5 hours of sleep a night, dementia has been setting in for years....

I go to sleep around midnight and sleep less than 5 hours, so I guess I’m set.

Life’s too short to spend that much time in bed.

But if you get less than 7 hours sleep, you run a higher risk of Stress granules which has been correlated with prostrate cancer.
Trying to get the optimum number of sleep hours could keep you up at night.

Check for sleep apnea. The apnea intrupts sleep because you stop breathing and makes you sleep longer. On top of that your blood O2 drops way down which accelerates dementia.

I’d be lucky to get a full 7 in... Even if I go out on a Saturday night and get plowed, I’m still up by 4;30 or 5AM that Sunday morning... It’s a curse!!

Correlation is not causation. They are not claiming that longer sleep causes dementia. It's more likely that a symptom of the earliest stages of dementia is longer sleeping.

Really. Life is for living, there’s too many things to do to sleep one’s life away. Me, I generally rotate around about 7 or so hours.
