About those EV home charging systems...
self ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | self

I've been musing re home EV charging. I have no expertise beyond common sense but there will surely be practical considerations involved...

Let's say we have a surburban family with mom, pop & children all driving EVs. How many can be charged at once? I am thinking a multi-EV charging system and the necessary electrical capacity to safely power it would both need to be heavy-duty and therefore quite expensive. ka-ching and then you get to pay the electric bill!

If this home only has a minimum power charging system requiring hours to charge a single vehicle, there would be EVs on that charger constantly - and squabbles about "I'M next!" Btw, the insurance companies will note these systems and surely raise their rates accordingly.

Scenario 2: Same residential home but Mom & Pop are travelling for a week. I can envision Junior or Miss Cutie Pie telling their friends "Sure, come on over! My parents are gone for the week, you can use our charger all you want." More ka-ching on the power bill.

On a concurrent note, I've read speculative posts on how once a residential neighborhood reaches sufficient EV saturation, the electrical distribution serving them will necessarily need to be strengthened to handle all the extra required capacity. Someone must pay up for these modifications.

And then you get to buy that $12,000 replacement battery.

Assuming that $12,000 is accurate in today's market, what will that market price be in 5 years? 10 years?

” (What I’ve heard.) The people who build the charging stations may or may not be able to service your model. You’d have to bring your own plug converter and my guess is when you leave for lunch someone will steal it.”

Tesla is converting all their chargers to be universal.

This is where Starbucks has not caught on yet... the should place mega-Starbucks next to charging facilities. Not only do you have trapped customers, that can use a coffee. They happen to be the right type of people. So while Starbucks in inner-cities are shutting down, this is an area of a growth market.

Is that graphic for real?

That’s crazy.

Hay mayble you can pay for 460V industrial service at your residence.

Or better yet, add a flux capacitor to your tesla and connect it to a lightning rod. You might have to wait a few years for the strike, but you’ll be able to roll for free for weeks!

Yep. I was a big fan, 25 years ago, of everything going EV.

Then I educated myself. EV is not ready for prime time, though it has its function. e.g. golf carts or fork lifts.

To add a 220v circuit should not cost that much. A 40amp 220v curcuit would require 8/2 awg wire which is around $2/ft. The 40a breakers would be about $20/per( 2 needed ).

I am still not sure why this is so much $$$$$$$$$?

Most home services don’t have the capacity for 40Amp draw chargers

If you home has a full 100Amp panel, you will need to upgrade the panel and service to 200Amp

That is why you are seeing 6 grand install charges

And in some jurisdictions you need to upgrade everything else to code, got Multiwire circuits? Knob and tube? non grounded romex or Bx? You need to rewire your entire house as well. Plenty of stories on electrical boards of people paying 20K to 30K to upgrade their house so they can plug in their new golf cart car

Its insane

Which for the average driver is topping off every night while sleeping and not having to mess with gas stations.

You left out the part where the family runs out of the house when their EV battery sets the house on fire...IF they run out of the house.

It doesn’t cost that much...that’s ridiculous. I installed a 240v Tesla charger and the cost was maybe $400 for materials, total. Granted, I did the work myself, but in no way should it cost $6500.

Tesla: 200 miles in 15 minutes using 250 kw charger.

The Terra 360 (kW) advertises 100 km in 3 minutes.

Porsche is installing 350 kw stations.

Yes, all that’s true. We haven’t even touched on the apartment & condo dwellers. And what about wanting to charge up while you’re at work. There needs to be charging plate to drive your car on and it charges while it’s sitting there, no plug-in needed lol

“in inner-cities”

Would you want to park your $50-$125K Tesla at a parking spot in the inner city for a hour?

” So at about 8-9PM you have another surge in demand for power. “

Markets adjust with lower rates 9PM to 9AM. No surge.
