About those EV home charging systems...
self ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | self

Posted on 09/21/2022 11:21:13 AM PDT by citizen

I've been musing re home EV charging. I have no expertise beyond common sense but there will surely be practical considerations involved...

Let's say we have a surburban family with mom, pop & children all driving EVs. How many can be charged at once? I am thinking a multi-EV charging system and the necessary electrical capacity to safely power it would both need to be heavy-duty and therefore quite expensive. ka-ching and then you get to pay the electric bill!

If this home only has a minimum power charging system requiring hours to charge a single vehicle, there would be EVs on that charger constantly - and squabbles about "I'M next!" Btw, the insurance companies will note these systems and surely raise their rates accordingly.

Scenario 2: Same residential home but Mom & Pop are travelling for a week. I can envision Junior or Miss Cutie Pie telling their friends "Sure, come on over! My parents are gone for the week, you can use our charger all you want." More ka-ching on the power bill.

On a concurrent note, I've read speculative posts on how once a residential neighborhood reaches sufficient EV saturation, the electrical distribution serving them will necessarily need to be strengthened to handle all the extra required capacity. Someone must pay up for these modifications.

Years ago I was told the recycling progression:

First it’s voluntary. Then it’s mandatory. Then they make you pay. Sometimes they make you separate it into different bins.

“Where do they park them?”

Most multifamily are designed with 2 cars per unit in mind.
Cheap developer they try to cheat on that, but a decent building will have 2 per unit. In reality that is not enough by the time you get the boat trailer, golf cart trailer, dually (extra wide) in the mix will be a problem.

I have spent some significant portion of my life urging, helping people to get a simple Drivers License in Texas, other than walking to nearest fast food joint or convenience store you can’t get a good job in Texas without the DL.

Two PARKING SPOTS?

Where there is a parking spot there is a space for a charger.

Tesla high voltage batteries are not like this;

Tesla low voltage batteries look like that, they are conventional lead acid.

“I posted numbers a few days ago on this site. Based on readily available numbers and simple math but the dude said all the data was fake.”

I have my suspicions about a lot of the data I see thrown around. Best assumptions and wishful thinking often don’t survive first contact with reality. I also think some people don’t have our best interests at heart.

It’s not out of date at all. What’s wrong with you why are you so obnoxious?

Here it is from a Tesla owners manual. I’ve been checking this out because we are thinking about buying one.

My solution is a ‘97 4.0 Jeep.

I had a '96 4.0L High Output. Great motor, couldn't kill it.

Ok Fair enough, it will work for some but it sure as hell won’t work for all maybe not for most. It would not have worked for me or my wife while we working with our commute.

I am not against progress but I am against stupid.

I was for over 60 years in a business that required special engineering for custom equipment. In later years I was deep into automated machine lines.

Plus much more more interesting stuff, but that was another life long past.

I actually think electric vehicles might be a good idea, but not the way the government is trying to force on us.

An electric vehicle that generates it own electricity similar to the diesel electric locomotive is the correct way to go.

As you know, several auto manufacturers are building cars today that generate their own.

We have a neighbor that has a Toyota that gens its own and she loves it.

What would you think if you saw a diesel electric locomotive plugged in ty an electrical outlet?

And don’t forget the diesel electric submarines.

It cost $6,500 to purchase and install the 220 volt type for her Tesla.

At the current cost of 87 octane here in HELLINOIS, that's 1,629 gallons of gas.

Economically, it doesn't make sense when factoring in the $70,000 Tesla, which is 17,544 gallons of gas.
