I know this has probably been going on a long time. Bu I have a problem with the concept. And everyone should.
I just ordered $1000 worth of tires. The shipper sent them free shipping. They use FedEx as contracted.
Long story short, after two weeks of chasing hese down o make sure they actually and finally get to me something happened that bothered me greatly.
The shipper sent them as "signature required". Bu when they finally showed up I asked the delivery guy if he needed a signature. He told me that no he did not because he already applied "signature on file".
I asked him... How do you know it is at the right address and the right person? He told me "doesn't matter, I signed for you and you received them".
But how do you know I am being honest about who I am?
"Doesn't matter, they were delivered".
Personally I am going to make sure they remove my signature from "on file". If they had delivered these to a wrong address and person I would have been out $1000 bucks and would have had to fight with possibly even a lawsuit to get justification.
I strongly suggest addressing this "on file" issue with any and all delivery services you use. No... unless I sign for each and every delivery then it didn't happen.

If they can claim it was signed for, or you allow “signature on file” then the delivery is complete. If the condition is terrible/item destroyed YOU have to pay and arrange freight to return it.
If the item arrives and you notice damage you can refuse delivery and FedEx is responsible for returning to the shipper/origin. Never sign for an expensive item until you’re able to verify the item is functional/good working order/undamaged.
A buddy ordered a bumper for his van which he refused delivery on due to damage and as he didn’t sign off, it went right back into the delivery truck...

Same here. Recently I had a "signature required" that was delivered to my neighbor. He signed for it and brought it over. Other times they show "delivered" but nobody around me has it, nor do I. I think they have a hard time delivering to the right zip code, never mind the address. Amazon uses GPS to deliver. Always right. UPS gets it right. FedEx drops 200 pounds of dog food meant for my neighbor in my driveway.

Hey UPS is worse. If they deliver and on time they just leave the package anywhere. And they still haven’t delivered an Amazon Fire from like 6 years ago! LOL. Amazon had to resend. They also lost an Intex 18 ft pool and filter that had to be reordered. They claimed the first one was delivered! Amazon didn’t believe them. We got another pool.

The end of July my wife ordered a range hood from the local Lowe's. They had none in stock or we would have driven over to buy it.
Lowe's estimated date of delivery was Tuesday, 2Aug22.
Saturday, 30July, Lowe's texted and said the order was on it's way and would be delivered Sunday 31July.
Sunday 31July they texted and said it was delivered. it wasn't.
We contacte Lowe's the next day and found out the autofill addressing thing dropped a number in our address but they delivered it anyway to a dentist's office at the end of our street and whose address is based on the intersecting street. As far as Lowe's is concerned the matter is closed; take it up with the cc company.
We did since it was Lowe's cc company Synchrony and after a few days they said 'from all the information provided by the merchant they see no reason to offer a credit for the loss.
Then we turned to FedEx and while I was typing this they just texted my wife and said they are investigating and within fourteen days will give us an update.
Democrat order, ain't it grand? I wonder if their slogan for seperating themselves from US proles is 'It takes a corporate village'?
This happened with this particular delivery too. “Delivered” and a delivery time. Three times... Still not here. It took me dozens of phone calls to finally talk to a human, and then two days of transfers to get a human with more than two brain cells to find my lost $1000 delivery.
Again... Still funny? Please explain why that was so funny?
I’m going to keep asking... And I am going to keep exposing the childish behavior.

People pay extra for signture on delivery for proof of delivery.
Sounds like things are going downhill fast in the delivery business. I used to drive for a courier company that sometimes picked up residential orders from larger outfits like FedEx and UPS. But the rules remained the same for their deliveries, signatures required unless otherwise indicated, so it used to be the normal procedure not an exception.
You might not get fired for leaving a delivery at a door when not authorized, but if it happened two or three times you would be fired. And if anyone lost a delivery between an unauthorized drop and when they looked for it, the driver was on the hook financially to replace the item whatever it may have cost (plus the second delivery fee).
Can’t say whether the fleet drivers for the bigger companies had those same conditions. However the bigger companies were always on the phone with our smaller company’s dispatchers to get the contact info for deliveries.
Sounds a bit different now in this age where everyone is getting a lot of stuff delivered. If you sign off on requiring a signature you’re taking the chance of having one of those thieves who follow delivery trucks hitting your location.
The worst delivery error I can recall was way before my time as a driver, some oil company pumped heating oil into an address in one town but the client lived at that same address in another town. Somebody without an oil furnace got a basement full of heating oil through an old connection.
At USPS yes. If you order something from someone who offers free shipping included you have no choice of how they deliver it. But they need to make sure no one else can end up with it.
