I wish they'd define "highly processed." Some foods that are routinely considered "junk" are not highly processed.
Perhaps the oils used in a lot of these foods is the culprit.

My God, this is ignorant. Here's how the "study" determined diet choices of participants:
Participants in the study completed at least two questionnaires on what they ate and drank the day before.
Why would anyone post crap like this?

Yogurt is not a highly processed food. I have a feeling that the “study” might not stand up under scrutiny. Just a feeling. We already know that foods made with refined flour, sugar, and fat are not healthful choices. Tht is why they taste so good.

Soft drinks, salty and sweet snacks, ice cream, sausage, deep-fried chicken, yogurt, canned tomatoes and baked beans, ketchup, mayonnaise, packaged guacamole and hummus, packaged bread, and flavored cereals are some examples of ultra-processed foods. Bull.
I mean really completely and totally bull.
Fried chicken is chicken, flour maybe some seasonings fried in oil.
Mayonnaise is egg blended with vinegar and oil, yogurt is milk that has been mixed with culture and left to set about 12 hours.
NONE of these are "ultra-processed".
If I can whip it up in my kitchen in under 30 minutes it is not ultra processed.

Oh, easily. Dementia runs in my family, though I’m hoping to slow mine down with clean food, fresh air and sunshine.
My relatives lived on Oscar Mayer lunch meats and Kraft ‘cheese’ slices on a daily basis.

Pizza, pretzels and chocolate bars - or a dementia-free old age. I’ll take the pizza and chocolate bars.

... sausage, deep-fried chicken, ... Well hello dementia.
To: Red Badger
Me too. I eat 2 meals a day... brunch is a ham sandwhich (luncheon meat ham] - every day, and soda- been doing it for decades. Dinner is not too bad, but carnivor choices (though not processed) with only a few veggies from time to time. I’m doomed too.

Maybe they got it backwards. Maybe people with dementia choose ultra-processed foods.

It is not processed foods which are the culprit. Think about who eats lots of processed junk foods pictured in the article. YES! there is your real reason. It is couch potatoes, lazy people, people who rather collect unemployment or welfare checks rather than drag their butt to work every day.
I eat tons of my favorite foods such as potato chips, pretzels, cheeseburgers from fast food joints like McDonalds & Burger King, deep fried chicken from Publix, milk shakes and greek gyros sandwiches from Arby’s, pancakes made at home slathered with lots of syrup, and wash it down with coca cola loaded with high fructose corn syrup.
I have zero health problems at age 82. I can still write computer programs to keep track of my investments. So how I avoid heart disease and dementia and keep my weight the same for last 50 years? It is daily gym exercise! Regular exercise is the most powerful tool to stay healthy bar none.

was the study controlled for obesity?
Because it sounds like that would be highly correlated to both eating “ultra-processed” foods and dementia.
