West Antarctica ‘Doomsday glacier’ hanging on ‘by its fingernails’: say scientists

Thwaites Glacier — otherwise known as the “Doomsday glacier,” due to the fact it could raise the sea level by several feet — is allegedly hanging on “by its fingernails.”

Scientists discovered that the glacier’s underwater base has been eroding due to the increase in the Earth’s temperature, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience.

“Thwaites is really holding on today by its fingernails,” said Robert Larter, a marine geophysicist who co-authored the study.

“And we should expect to see big changes over small timescales in the future — even from one year to the next — once the glacier retreats beyond a shallow ridge in its bed.”

West Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier is roughly the size of Florida and could potentially raise the sea level by nearly 16 feet should it fall into the ocean, which scientists predicted could happen within the next three years.

Researchers have monitored the glacier’s recession since “as recently as the mid-20th century,” according to lead author Alastair Graham, and have recorded a disintegration rate of nearly double since the last decade.

Earlier this year, an international group of scientists attempted to study the glacier in an effort to help stop the erosion, however, the group was thwarted by a chunk of ice from the doomed glacier.

Graham stated that it “was truly a once-in-a-lifetime mission” and he hopes that the team will be able to return to the glacier soon — since scientists believed the erosion was working at a slower pace before the study was published.

Until now I’d never heard of “West Antarctica.”

Every direction from the south pole is north.

Is this yet more arbitrary reportage or what?

Another “potential” climate catastrophe is right on schedule...

The federal fiscal year is soon to end and the BS propaganda for continued funding ramps up...

IAC, have they even checked the toenails?
They could be holding it in place also...

Here’s the part I find very hard to understand.. This could raise sea levels by 16’ within the next 3 years. But no one is doing anything about this except a group of guys who tried to get close to it and were thwarted by a chunk of ice. Somehow I don’t think the world community accepts this premise.

lol...great point!

The Pine Island Glacier has been melting due to a volcano heat source that researchers have found underneath the glacier in Antarctica. The volcanic activity was first noticed in 2007 and then verified in 2014. This volcanic activity was discovered by some scientists at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. From January to March of 2014 scientists from the United Kingdom were aboard an icebreaker during the summer down in Antarctica. They were studying the melting of the ice shelf due to the heat from the volcano. Scientists noted that the last time there was volcanic activity under the Pine Island Glacier was about 2200 years ago. Researchers also found high amounts of helium in the sea water at the Pine Island Shelf. The volcanic activity is not considered the only reason for the melting of the ice shelf in Antarctica – climate change is also a factor.

Scientists are not sure how the volcanic heat gets distributed under the bottom of the ice sheet. They do know for sure that the heat from the volcano is causing the ice to melt beneath the ice shelf. More studying is needed before they can understand why the volcano is causing the melting

Probably....also poorly researched. It took me less then 2 minutes to find the volcano data!

Al Gore to Conan O'Brian, November 18, 2009:
"People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot ..."
So there you have it. Geophysicist and scientist extraordinaire AlGore nailed it!

I sure hope the Obamas and Bidens have enough time to sell their ocean-side mansions before they are inundated.

“Scientists discovered that the glacier’s underwater base has been eroding due to the increase in the Earth’s temperature...”

The glacier is about the size of Florida, so, first of all, the scientists need to make plain just how they managed to scan the entire land base of the glacier, then map out just how global warming can penetrate miles of a thick sheets of ice and thaw it all out from the bottom. The warming would have to come from below, out of contact with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

“it could raise the sea level by several feet”

Is that enough to flood Obummer’s seaside compound?

They would also have to prove that the glacier is currently completely sitting on dry land.

Otherwise anyone who has done 2 second grade science experiment should know, ice that floats on water has zero effect on water level when it melts.

The glacier itself in approximately 90K square miles in size. According to an article from NBC, it is melting at a rate of 1.3 miles a year.

https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/doomsday-glacier-melt-faster-previously-thought-rcna46380

I’m not very good at math, but using a calculator melting at that rate, it won’t make any difference to any of my family and any ancestors for a from what I can figure close to 70K years. Even if they can, why wake me up?

Could. Potentially.
If the entire glacier were to melt at once, maybe.
That's not how glaciers work. It takes a while, enough to make other glaciers, or this one, to grow by a similar amount.
And floating glaciers make no difference at all in sea level, since they are already displacing the same volume they will melt into.

That whole thing falling into to the ocean is going to raise the world’s sea level .00001 inch.
