Thwaites Glacier — otherwise known as the “Doomsday glacier,” due to the fact it could raise the sea level by several feet — is allegedly hanging on “by its fingernails.”
Scientists discovered that the glacier’s underwater base has been eroding due to the increase in the Earth’s temperature, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience.
“Thwaites is really holding on today by its fingernails,” said Robert Larter, a marine geophysicist who co-authored the study.
“And we should expect to see big changes over small timescales in the future — even from one year to the next — once the glacier retreats beyond a shallow ridge in its bed.”
West Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier is roughly the size of Florida and could potentially raise the sea level by nearly 16 feet should it fall into the ocean, which scientists predicted could happen within the next three years.
Researchers have monitored the glacier’s recession since “as recently as the mid-20th century,” according to lead author Alastair Graham, and have recorded a disintegration rate of nearly double since the last decade.
Earlier this year, an international group of scientists attempted to study the glacier in an effort to help stop the erosion, however, the group was thwarted by a chunk of ice from the doomed glacier.
Graham stated that it “was truly a once-in-a-lifetime mission” and he hopes that the team will be able to return to the glacier soon — since scientists believed the erosion was working at a slower pace before the study was published.

I'd like to see the full evidence of this discovery.
I imagine that they may have found some erosion.
And then hypothesized that maybe the Earth's temperature could be increasing.
But that would be a hypothesis, not a discovery.

Gotta show something or that grant money dries up.
And they really think driving EV’s will change mattes significantly?
Raise sea level!?!? These people are unbelievably stupid. One cubic mile of water equals one trillion gallons. We are going to need two or three million of these catastrophic events to raise sea level.

Since when does ice sink?
That glacier has enough water to supply a continent with water for a decade. Harness it baby.
I’d like to see their evidence that the earth’s temp has increased over the past 15 years. Did they consider there may be undersea volcanoes warming the underside up, as there are in the artic?
Is that like the coral reef that was supposedly dead due to man-made climate change, but somehow despite how awful man is, the coral is miraculously healthier than ever?
Float it down the Colorado River
These people think it will raise sea level... by several feet?
Do they have any concept of how big the planet is? Of how much water there is?
Meh, everything is ‘doomsday’ to the climate folks.....everything.
New volcanoes hidden under the ice
Using radar mapping data of Antarctica, a research team from Edinburgh University was recently able to confirm the presence of 91 volcanoes under up to 4km of ice sheets in West Antarctica. Before this announcement, the world already knew about 47 in this part of the continent, making this update significant for Antarctic science moving forward.
