WHO IS THE AVERAGE COSTCO CUSTOMER
Investopedia.com ^ | July 25, 2022 | Richard Best

Ask anyone who shops at Costco (COST) what they think of it and you'll probably hear exuberant praise, along with a list of the great deals they scored on their last visit. More than 111 million people pay an annual membership fee just to get in the door, with fewer than 10% each year who decide the experience isn’t worth the price of renewing. To some, shopping at Costco is close to a religious experience, which might explain why Sunday is its busiest day. For others, going to the warehouse is like going on a treasure hunt. They may be going to get cereal or pet food, but to get there they need to walk past aisles packed floor to ceiling with new inventories of cool stuff. But just who is the average Costco shopper? Keep reading to learn more.

We had some great times at Costco. All our computers, phones, pots and pans, dishes, some furniture, back yard enhancements, etc came from there….plus a slice of pizza or a brat with kraut.
Happy happy moments.

Our sons hate shopping anywhere for anything. However, they liked the computers, printers and audio stuff that came from Costco.

Our grandkids until they went away to college from K to 12 loved to go shopping at Costco with us, sampling free food.

Then, getting a slice or two of pizza for lunch and sharing the Costco Deli Chicken for dinner were fun times and a bargain for Grandma/Pa.

A grandson shops at Costco as his parents give him a weekly cash amount, he saves enough money to buy hunting/fishing gear.

Time keeps flowing like a river….to the sea.

“And I’ve seen the fees to get a membership at Costco. I’d be surprised if you save enough on their products in total through the year to cover that fee. “

We save that on gas alone.

And you can’t beat their return policy! No other store can beat it.

Ah. Membership stores go back a ways. Sam’s Club was the first membership store we ever joined.
I’m sure if people are looking deep, there are problems with all of them. For me, I just shop. If I like it, I buy it. If not, I don’t. Sometimes I run down to Harbor Freight for a free flashlight, or a tarp I don’t need, or something. It never occurred to me to ask where their inventory was coming from. I never cared what other shoppers looked like. There are some parts of life that politics shouldn’t penetrate.

” and selling mounds of Chinese garbage and trashy bulk foods.”

Have you ever been in a Costco?

Relax. General you, impersonal you, whatever called....not second person pronoun.

“Prices rose without notice; packages got so big, it only paid if you owned a restaurant.”

We are a family of light eaters. We regularly shop Costco. We don’t own a restaurant.

Have been a Costco customer since the old "Price Club" days in southern California. I guess it's habit for me now.

That said, they do have a good deal on major appliances if they have a model you want. I recently bought a new Maytag dishwasher (replaced an ancient one that started smoking) and found that while the base cost was the same as the appliance store, the Costco price included delivery, installation, parts for hook up, and haul away of the old one. All that was about $250 extra at the appliance store.

I also have a Costco Visa which saves 4% on gas. Currently that works out to an extra $.12-$.16 less per gallon, off an already lower price than other stations. I am retired, and can usually get gas when it's not so crowded, tho.

YMMV

“We do NOT care for Costco’s beef....Prime, or, otherwise.”

We love it. The only meat we buy at Sam’s club is their “wagyu” hamburger.

Maybe, but for me the price of membership, the 40 miles each way to the store, and the slight the mark down price savings means I have to buy tons of stuff to make it come out even.

Member since 1983, originally called price club in sacto, off 65th street behind sears. Only place to get meat and fish, of excellent quality, excellent choices, and very tasty.

I don't like their greens though, they are not gone through to clean up. I pay more but get much better green and other veggies (that I don't grow) at raley's.

Their canned goods in cases are a good deal, for storage and rotation, and coffee is excellent price.

I originally joined for the business needs, paper, etc, but now maybe fifty fifty.

“A big screen TV comes with 2 year warranty from Costco. Who beats that for the price?”

The last 3 Samsungs I bought came with five year warranties.

I used to get deals at Best Buy Buy because Costco was late with newer models but now they have the latest with competitive prices and better delivery service.

Most free delivery like BB will bring the box into the house. Costco will take it out of the box, set it up and plug it in to make sure it works.

I am relaxed, thanks.

Got it, thanks for clariifying.

Our local grocer has American Beef wagyu, Natural, Grass fed cuts - at great prices - of Pichana, as well as other greats cuts.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Excellent summary. I pretty much agree.
The clientele at Costco is a couple of notches higher than Sam’s club (if you know what I mean); please don’t ask if I am being racist.

“I also have a Costco Visa which saves 4% on gas.”

It also doubles the factory warranty on most items.

"Our local grocer has American Beef wagyu,"

Not worth the extra price. OTOH we do splurge in some A5 from time to time.

Wow. That’s a long time.

I don’t buy their produce. Only oranges. Their meat is great. Expensive but great. They answered all our business needs as well. Loved Christmas decorations but you can only own so many. Things have changed a lot since the “pandemic” when they shut down the snack bar area for a couple years. The acrylic or glass is still present everywhere.
I have a Costco CitiBank card. I get a generous bonus each year for my purchases. Some years were better than the past three.
Hopefully we’ll recover from the chaos…but a lot of damage has been done. And thru it all, Costco pleases most of it customers. If they aren’t pleased, they don’t renew membership. Simple.

“In particular, Costco forces one to buy huge package, often one ends up throwing away most of the stuff.”

We are two light eaters. Costco is our main source for food. We almost never throw anything away.

A lot of the bulk packages have smaller packages within.
