An electric vehicle needed some coal miners to get where it needed to go last week.
The vehicle broke down Friday near Mettiki Coal access road on US 48, in Tucker County, West Virginia, according to WBOY-TV.
A Facebook post from Randy Smith described the incident.
Smith is a Republican state senator who represents the region where the incident took place, according to the West Virginia state Legislature website. He’s also the safety coordinator at Mettiki Coal, his Facebook page states.
“Some days are just better than others,” Smith wrote before launching into the tale.
“Today at our mine off Corridor H an electric car from DC ran out of battery at the road entrance to the mine. Someone called one of our foreman and told him a car was broke down in the middle of our haul road,” he wrote.
The foreman learned the car’s passengers were en route from Washington, D.C., to the Tucker County town of Davis, Smith wrote. Davis is about 170 miles west of D.C.
“He then went back to the mine and got guys to push the car to the guard shack so they could plug in to charge,” he wrote.
Giving the vehicle a tow was out of the question, he wrote, because “it was all plastic underneath and nothing to hook up to.”
“So here are 5 coal miners pushing a battery car to the coal mine to charge“up. If you look closely you can see our coal stockpile and load out in the background,” he wrote.

Gas cars that I've seen on a dyno lose about 12% of their hp to the wheels, not 75%.
They can run the front or rear wheels up on a dolly and no need the hook onto the car body.
B-U-T.....are theses EVs all AWD? If you put two wheels on a dolly and tow the car, does it do any damage to the electric motor on each wheel that is still on the ground and turning at highway speeds? Or do all four wheels need to be on dollies? These EVs WILL turn out to be big PITAs, even beyond the ruination of the mined areas, and the horror of many acres of scrapped batteries.

EV manufacturers are working directly with recyclers to insure capability even BEFORE new battery designs hit the market.

It does if you measure the engine separately then measure it in the car at the wheels. But 15% is the universally recognized drivetrain loss.
By far most of the loss is in the combustion cycle. Most of the heat of combustion is absorbed in the engine or just remains in the exhaust gases.
But no one ever cared much because it was so much better than the horse or steam engine it replaced.
I would expect someone who took a thermodynamics course to know this and not attribute it to "drivetrain losses" (which would mean the transmission and differential would need active cooling to handle that much energy lost to heat.)
When EVs are better than ICE vehicles no starry eyed, dishonest fanboys will be needed to hawk them.
A pressure cooker type set up with a non-oxygen environment, some inert gas, should work. But the required heat could only be supplied by a nuclear reactor, since oil, gas and coal are verboten. Oh...wait...
That’s why they want to reduce the population by 95%, so they won’t need as much of that hated energy!

I can see having an electric for runabout use as my #4 vehicle, but right now they are way too expensive.
