That’s why the pubs are living on a thin line.

Blame the NHS. To “limit drinking” pubs were forced to close early. So people just ordered a doze drinks at last call and slammed them fast.

One of the oldest companies of the world is an Irish Bar. Sean’s was started in the 900s... Hope it will survive!

I remember Pop Dieddel's in Montgomery Hills, Maryland from long ago. Alas, it is long gone.

I spent many evenings, and some mornings, in English pubs. They are not compatible with Indian and African clientele.I spent many evenings in German gasthauses during my 4+ year tour in Germany. The owner's living quarters were upstairs, the restaurant downstairs. My last two years I dined mostly at the gasthaus about a five minute walk from my apartment. I can imagine they're having difficulties, too.
Never had a bad meal in Germany...never.

I remember Pop Dieddel's in Montgomery Hills, Maryland from long ago. Alas, it is long gone. It may have had a slightly more Teutonic flavor than British, but served the same purpose.

True. but if a pub is actually owned by the proprietor there is a sign outside “Free House”. When I was young I thought that it meant that the drinks were free. Dumb kid!.

During Covid In a number of neighborhoods here, someone would turn a garage bay into a pub with beer tables and people would bring food. every night they congregated and talked and listened to music.
Closest things to pubs that I have seen here.

I had a fling with a part-time bar maid ( she was office worker in Islington as well ) who worked in a pub called The John Baird in Muswell Hill during one of my six visits to England between 1976-1983 .

Last time I was in England - 1983 - a pint of bitter cost 67 pence . It now costs almost 4 pounds ! A beer in Japan - where I have resided since 1985 - costs the same now as it did in 85 !

The British/Scottish/Irish pubs...are small places to eat simple meals, to gather with friends and neighbors.... To lose this activity will be devastating to communities.Ah, that's the whole idea: to destroy this comeraderie and to suck the joy out of life. To paraphrase Little Red Riding Hood, "All the better to control you with, my dear."

Sounds like a plan: shut down the places where the common people can talk and share ideas outside of the monitoring and censorship of Facebook and Twitter.

Lots of younger people have busy schedules and don't want to hang around at the pubBusy doing what? Yoga? I get your point though.
