Good food.

And company.

I spent many evenings, and some mornings, in English pubs. They are not compatible with Indian and African clientele.

The commentators were saying that pubs are a uniquely British institution that few foreigners patronize. The only Indians, Africans, etc. who go to pubs are usually "Britishized."

The title sums it up nicely.

Can anyone provide a two-sentence summary?

High energy prices coming so soon after the devastating covid lockdowns are forcing thousands of British pubs out of business. Since pubs serve as community centers for native British people, this development is destructive to traditional British society.

The United States began in the pubs of the UK.

People congregate there and discuss things, at length, and with the expectation that political ideas should be presented and fairly analyzed by all sides.

Our Revolution was formulated in the pubs of the Colonies, which were transplanted from the UK.

No such 'places' in the US now (except FR or other such sites). But they still exist in the UK.

Paul is excellent.

Green energy is killing the working class...and the elites don’t give a damn, but more money for Ukraine.

As the Brits say “they’re taking the piss”.

Do the Indians and Africans know that - and hence avoid them?

“....British/Scottish/Irish pubs are not bars....”

For centuries they have been the common room, the family room that bound a small hamlet or neighborhood together.

No need for that now, whot?

Give the Yank a pint !

Depending upon the charity and kindness of the locals, I'd think twice before accepting that pint!

"So, Yank, is it true what they say? That a Yank can't tell the difference between warm beer and cat piss?"

"But this was cold!

"Blimey, the Yank's smarter than 'e looks!"

Regards,

“Do the Indians and Africans know that - and hence avoid them?”

So, you childishly think any and all cultures and people are the same?

Had a friend just come back from a UK trip. She said it was almost impossible to find a pub in the smaller towns west of London. The Muslims moved in and bought the pubs to close them.

Pretty much every episode of Midsomer Murders featured a pub that was in trouble and had to be sold or converted into something like a wine bar. I realize it was just a TV show, but I don't think they would have made that a key plot point so often if it weren't partially true.

The culture of the UK was changing drastically a long time ago. A huge section of the population now no longer drinks, either for health or religious reasons.

Lots of younger people have busy schedules and don't want to hang around at the pub, but instead get take away vindaloo for dinner and drink at home.

Even without the price hikes, the pubs would be doomed.

In the US we have fewer dive bars. We have more sports bars, bar and grills, etc. Sitting around drinking pint after pint is no longer considered socially acceptable or good time management.

Muslim businessmen prefer to go to strip clubs for their business, especially the Saudis. When a plane leaves Saudi airspace, they drink all the liquor on the plane, and then when the plane lands, they make a bee-line for the Strip club.

First, the COVID lockdowns crippled the pubs. Now the rising utility prices due to the energy crisis looks to finish them off.

Thank you!

Not a bad look to have. A few years ago I snagged a front row seat to her show. I got a high five from her during one number when she came down to cavort with the crowd. One of those perks for being in the front row at times.

One thing I didn’t know about British pubs until I went to visit the UK in 2006, was that the majority of them are not freeholds, they are managed pubs, which means that beer firms and brewers have a say over what can, and can’t be sold in your pub.

But that makes Saudi Islam followers look like a bunch of hypocrites! Yet somehow they generated the loons who perpetrated 9-11-01. It would be nice if their oil ran out so they can go back to being semi-savage nomads fighting amongst each other.
