Klavan's Three GREAT Modern Movies (Plus: Leftists ACCIDENTALLY Made a Great Christian Film)
YouTube ^ | August 24, 2022 | Andrew Klavan

It's no secret that we are in the midst of a cultural slump rife with bad films, television, music, and books. Fortunately, there hasn't been a complete absence of great modern art, as evidenced by these three films.

I was in LA quite a bit on business during the 2010’s and really liked it except for one thing, the traffic, which pretty much ruined it. I would often think about how great it must have been in the pre traffic era and the movie gives you a sense of that. You make a good point about the smog, btw. In the movie there’s no smog so it’s sort of an idealized portrayal in that way.

I used to go to LA a lot in the 1980s. I remember one day I was trying to get from Huntington Beach to the airport. I checked out of my hotel 4 hours before my flight and thought I’d have lots of time to spare. No. I ended up barely making by flight with less than 5 minutes to spare.

I remember being on a road that was hopelessly gridlocked. I was really anxious, but the people around me just seemed chill and taking it in stride. I remember a blond woman in a covertible wearing sunglasses while reading a book — not at all bothered.

I think that was the moment I decided never to live in CA.

Yep, I know just what you mean. I tried to use the little Burbank airport whenever I could for that very reason. And yes, the LA natives are totally habituated to the traffic. They know traffic the way eskimos know snow.

The linked review makes the case that three relatively recent films -- Hail Caesar (2016), Tropic Thunder (2008), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) -- should be considered conservative films.

Hail Caesar is hilarious. And yes it pokes fun at Hollywood commies. It really is a movie about the movie business and rather inside baseball (which may explain its poor box office) but I loved it.

Based on this thread, I watched “Hail Caesar” last night (it is currently available for streaming on Netflix).

Not my favorite Coen movie (that would be The Big Lewbowski, with Inside Llewn Davis a close second), but very amusing. And I agree with you about how it made the Commie writers look. Even worse, was that how the star actor they kidnapped (played by George Clooney) just ate up their garbage. It was very satisfying to see the Studio Boss (Mannix) put him in his place at the end of the film.

Maybe the biggest loser was the actor who defected to the Soviet Union, forsaking his lavish lifestyle, including his Malibu home.

There’s been tons of good movies made in modern times ....

I agree. And actually, so does Andrew Klavan, as you will see if you will watch his videos. Finding the good stuff is the trick. He argues, as a broad collective generalization, that Hollywood has taken a wrong turn culturally. He also takes the view (almost universally shared on FR) that the left ruins everything it touches and that the woke epidemic that is running amuck in the film and tv industry is creative poison. But the film industry is not a monolith. Independent films, foreign films, and honest storytellers still manage to navigate the minefields and push back against the industry norms. If you watch his stuff, Klavan sounds like a freeper. I would not be surprised to discover that he is.

Anyhow, I agree with you that good movies are still being made. It's up to us to find them.

Your recommendations?

As always, I want to nudge in the direction of reasonably recent films. Golden oldies are fine, but most of us have already seen them. It's the new stuff that can be hard to find, partly because the streamers have fragmented the audience and a lot of the good films are invisible to most of the potential audience because they're on a platform to which you don't subscribe. (Or maybe you just weren't watching on the three days they flashed across the "just added" page before disappearing deep into the catalogue.) Most films eventually escape the silos and become cheap rentals or free to you as they bounce from one platform to another, but that can take years. By that time, they're old news; they have no current buzz and you are likely to overlook them unless you already know about them.

If you've seen something, say something. I do add freeper recommendations to my watchlist and encourage others to develop that habit. It's a place to start. I may or may not get around to actually watching a given film, but at least I have a heads up on something I had not been aware of.

For the good of the order, if you see something good, say something.

Susan Sarandon is shit and any film she appears in is the same. The character that was finally executed was human excrement, this film is classic liberal whining. Why would anyone think it was culturally conservative. I have seen this stupid nun speak several times, she is pure ‘Catholic Worker’ clerico communist who cares only for human garbage such as the convict whose case the film centers on and cares nothing for normal, hard working people that these people prey on. Why does anyone here have anything good to say about such a piece of crap?

Oh, my. You don't have True Grit as #1? It's a great western, but it also may be the best coming of age story ever made, with a 14 year old girl (played by a 14 year old actress), bullying Rooster Cogburn into submission. It walks the drama-comedy tightrope as well as any movie I've ever seen. Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges both turn in Oscar-worthy performances.

If you want to see a really good & recent movie on the evils of communism, watch Mr. Jones:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6828390/

It is about the Ukranian famine of the early 1930s and the commie-symp journalists who tried to cover it up.

Another good one, but older & more obscure, is The Inner Circle with Tom Hulce:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103838/

Mr. Jones is excellent. Among other things, it finally gives Walter Duranty his due. It should be mandatory viewing in all journalism schools. I’ve not seen The Inner Circle but will add it to my watchlist. Some other good films on communism, in no particular order:

Balloon (2018, Michael Herbig, dir., Kanopy)

The Way Back (2010; Peter Weir, dir.; not the more recent film with the same name; this one has Ed Harris, Colin Farrell and a young Saoirse Ronan)

The Tower (2012, Christian Schwochow, dir., deals with East Germany/Stasi)

The Death of Stalin (2017; Armando Iannucci, dir.)

Dear Comrades! (2020; Andrey Konchalovskiy)

Ashes in the Snow (2018)

Within the Whirlwind (2009)

Chernobyl (2019; tv miniseries)

First They Killed My Father (2019; deals with Cambodia)

Almost forgot about that one. Excellent black comedy. Jason Issacs stole the show as Marshall Zhukov.

Another find. https://tubitv.com/movies/569744/good-friday?start=true Complexity of lawyer-craft and politics, and non-PC, of a lawyer who obeys conscience. Intriguing, well-acted moral story. Review: Lucas Cole is a high-power prosecutor who’s currently under political pressure to make a local scandal go away. Lucas wants to do his job but can’t shake the feeling of betraying an innocent victim. Lucas is also struggling with being a single dad to his son. Before he knows it, Lucas finds himself caught up in a complex scheme of local politics with little room for error.... - https://boxofficerevolution.wordpress.com/2021/06/03/good-friday-2020-movie-review/
