Based on this thread, I watched “Hail Caesar” last night (it is currently available for streaming on Netflix).
Not my favorite Coen movie (that would be The Big Lewbowski, with Inside Llewn Davis a close second), but very amusing. And I agree with you about how it made the Commie writers look. Even worse, was that how the star actor they kidnapped (played by George Clooney) just ate up their garbage. It was very satisfying to see the Studio Boss (Mannix) put him in his place at the end of the film.
Maybe the biggest loser was the actor who defected to the Soviet Union, forsaking his lavish lifestyle, including his Malibu home.
Oh, my. You don't have True Grit as #1? It's a great western, but it also may be the best coming of age story ever made, with a 14 year old girl (played by a 14 year old actress), bullying Rooster Cogburn into submission. It walks the drama-comedy tightrope as well as any movie I've ever seen. Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges both turn in Oscar-worthy performances.
True Grit 2010 was fantastic.
