Baggage handler dies in freak accident when hair gets caught on airport belt loader

NEW ORLEANS (WDSU/CNN Newsource/WKRC) - A baggage handler at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport got her hair caught on the conveyer belt, resulting in her tragic death.

"She said 'Mom I'm on my way to work' I said 'Okay I'll see you when you get home,'" said Angela Dorsey, Jermani Thompson 's mother.

But she never made it home.

Thompson always seemed to have a basketball in her hands.

"She was a basketball guru. She loved basketball. That was her thing," Dorsey said.

Word quickly began to spread Tuesday night that the 26-year-old had been killed in an industrial accident.

"The doctor said that her hair got stuck in the conveyer and they tried say they tried to cut her hair but they couldn't," said Dorsey. "She died on her way to the hospital."

Thompson, who was employed through GAT Airline Ground Support, was unloading baggage around 10:20 p.m. from a Frontier Airlines flight. Minutes later, her mother received the call.

Actually you bring up a good point. Why would not OSHA have protocols for hair, jewelry, neck ties, etc. when working around machinery. No wait, they do.

It’s simply that these rules are not enforced for privileged classes. Imagine a supervisor telling her that per OSHA reg you must have that doo tied up when working around conveyors. Can you say discrimination lawsuit.

Back when I had waist-length hair, I was always careful to keep it pulled back and tucked down the back of my shirt when I was around any kind of entanglement hazard.

Machines are not racist, they maim or kill anyone who disregard safety protocols.
RIP young lady. Whoever instructed you did a poor job.

When I had a job working around open machinery, the RULE was NO TIE, No Rings, nothing loose and there was a visual buddy-check before going into the machinery area. Somehow I thought OSHA was more strict now than then, but I appear to be wrong!

RIP for this woman and prayers for her family & friends!

Terrible that the young lady lost her life, but natural selection has a way of cleaning the gene pool. Though not nearly often enough.

Not to sound like I am making light of the situation, but did this girl have her scalp pulled off!? Absolutely horrible way to die.

Was that a union environment by chance?

That same work ethic is slowly working its way into the flight deck. Equity over competence.

>>There’s a problem here - but anyone calling it out will be labeled a racist

Not only racist, but in several states is actually illegal to not hire people because of their hair style (read blacks) - even if it means they are putting themselves in danger.

They probably didn’t get after her for wearing her hair that way for fear of being labeled racists.

It would have been racist to suggest that her hair style was a safety hazard.

1. Braid your hair into rope
2. Place rope into conveyor belt
3. Expect bad results

It was not since it was a subsidiary of a large airline. They subbed out the work for half the "Union" rate.

Most government agencies are now totally politicized. Instead of OSHA look for dangers in the workplace and enforcing safety standards, they are now more interested in enforcing rules based on race and political leanings.

If the regime sees a right leaning business, that business will get an OSHA visit to look for a reason to punish them. If the regime sees a business enforcing rules for safety on the protected ones like blacks and hispanics, they will get a visit from another agency to accuse them of racism.

This is why I do not trust people anymore, they are willing to sacrifice my life for their pet policy.

Are safety measures racist, now?

I'll bet there have been warnings in place for years about loose clothing and long hair around that equipment.
We had them in a factory I worked at 45 years ago. OSHA ain't always wrong.
