A 93-year-old grandmother with dementia died after being ‘accidentally poisoned’ when care home staff served her washing up liquid instead of juice.
Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell suffered ‘severe blistering of her mouth, throat and oesophagus’ after she was fed the corrosive liquid, reports suggest.
The mother-of-eight, who had 20 grandchildren, is one of three residents at Atria Park Senior Living Facility in San Mateo, California who were mistakenly given the ‘caustic’ liquid instead of grape juice and rushed to hospital, according to NBC.
Staff have been suspended while police investigate the tragedy, which happened on Saturday.
According to the New York Post, Ms Maxwell’s daughter, Marcia Cutchin, said the substance was an ‘alkaline solution that eats protein’.
‘Many people, like my mother, you have to hold a cup to her mouth and tip it into her mouth,’ she told local network KRON-TV.
The care home confirmed three residents were transported to hospital after ‘mistakenly being served dishwashing liquid as drinking juice’ and offered ‘sincerest condolences’ to the family of Ms Maxwell.

How in the world does something like that happen, unless they are hiring the most lazy, ignorant people? It seems to me that one would at least SMELL that something was wrong when pouring it out.
Not sure how that can happen accidentally unless they have staff with dementia. Poor old lady.
Totally deliberate.
AA at its worst, probably not mistakes.
Did it look like orange juice? Probably not.
Grape. Sorry.
The health care industry is changing.
Excuse one more thing .....
Is this place staffed by morons?
Amish, can’t trust them
I can’t be certain, but I would willing to bet that Alec Baldwin was somewhere close by...
When my elderly mother had a stroke, after she left intensive care, the only place that had a bed, while we worked out her finances for longer-term care elsewhere, was the rehab center associated with the "county hospital."
There were crazy/vagrants roaming the halls, the bathrooms were filthy, and anytime we sought-out a nurse, they could be found in their break-room, sitting on their obese, SEIU-union arses, talking to each other like the rest of the world didn't exist. My mother developed bed-sores in the brief time she was there, making me question whether they were providing any care at all.
So to answer your question, yes, THIS is the nature of state-run health-care.
Disgusting, was the idiot high?
Do not EVER put a loved one in a nursing home. If it is a parent, then the children should take care of them. After all, their parents sacrificed greatly to raise their children; it’s only fair that the kids should take care of them when they (the parents) are in their decline. That used to be the norm.
If I had to guess, it would be that the “caretaker” had a bad case of grievance syndrome. Hopefully the cops either get other employees to talk, or luck into online bitching about the patients or the “unfair” facility.
It has nothing to do with that, smartass. It has to do with *individuals*.
Its the uk, nothing will be done. They kill their old people off even more so than this place does.
