Len Dawson, the legendary quarterback who led the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory, has died, his family said Wednesday. Dawson was 87.

Dawson’s family released a statement to KMBC-TV, where the retired NFL star worked as a broadcaster.

"With wife Linda at his side, it is with much sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Len Dawson. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend. Len was always grateful and many times overwhelmed by the countless bonds he made during his football and broadcast careers," his family said in a statement.

Yeah. Two weeks earlier, Gatorade was credited with helping to win the Orange Bowl.

What always struck me about this pic was the size of the KC linemen compared to Dawson.

‘RIP Len!’

to put it very simply, my favorite, along with Paul Hornung...they met in Super Bowl I, when I was a senior in high school, though Hornung didn’t play due to a pinched nerve...

He had a fairly average arm, but he knew what to do with the ball.

Back before wokism and silly powder puff rules when real men played

The Fresca is a diet soda though.

Holding his cigarette like a joint, but some people just do.

‘What always struck me about this pic was the size of the KC linemen compared to Dawson.’

Dave Hill, 6’5 260, EJ Holub, 6’4, 236, Jim Tyrer, 6’6, 280, and probably Ed Budde, 6’5, 265...small by today’s standards...

‘Holding his cigarette like a joint, but some people just do.’

that was Super Bowl I, and based on the way the Chiefs played the second half, maybe the whole team toked up at halftime...

I attended or watched a lot of Len Dawson football games. My dad took me to two games the Chiefs played in Kansas City the first year they arrived in KC. I then was addicted. The first Super Bowl and then the first win were incredible times for Kansas City.

Often times the good players are not good broadcasters but Lenny was great at both. Fifty-Nine years since I first saw him play — wow.

RIP, but I hate him, and his cheating Chiefs.

I want to see a Super Bowl today where one team gets only water, while the other gets Gatorade, played outdoors in the sweltering humidity of New Orleans.

Then tell me the team with only water had a chance.

The Vikings defeated the browns in sub freezing temperature a week earlier, and then had to head to New Orleans, No, the Super Dome was not yet built.

Is it any wonder the Chiefs ran circles around the vaunted Purple Eaters?

The fix was in. The Chiefs had to win.

Just as the fix was in for thew Saints to go all the way when they won it all, with the referees ignoring the illegal hits and the fact they had QB hit contracts out for the defense to play dirty.

OK, OK, I am still a bit upset 52 some years later.

I guess that when you get to Super Bowl LVI, some of the players in the first ones will already be LXXXVII.

If I’m not mistaken, Joe Kapp got a dislocated shoulder in that game.

Yeah, and an energy drink was a great idea.

Yeah, and an energy drink was a great idea.
Try getting away with that today, and they will fine you by taking away draft picks, all the Vikings got was screwed.

Todays rules are that whatever one teams has as an advantage the other gets unless it is a drug.

Well Gatorade may not have been a drug, but it sure the hell made the difference. No one ever considers the cheating, yet to day there is not a sporting event in the World where gatorade is not on the sidelines.

History proves I am right, and they let the Chiefs win because of the big money involved in the merger.

Some claim the papers were signed and thew merger would have taken place anyway, well Hunt was the head of the committee, and they all agreed that to make the merger work they needed the Chiefs to win to put the icing on the cake of the merger so everyone would agree it was needed.

Needed or not, it was a rigged game from the outset. The Chiefs should have at least an asterisk next to their title in the record books.

%2 years later, can we at least get one honest sports writer to write about the Big Steal of the last Big Game before the merger took place?

I will go to my grave shaking my fist at the injustice.
