Why on earth would someone think that?
They're music is different and it's pretty much all a creation of Robert Smith. Good musicians though and Smith can play the guitar. They're tight musicians live. Still a bit weird though.

I remember when they would lump The Cure, Siouxsie, Joy Division, The Smiths, New Order, etc. under the term “Progressive” before the terms “Goth” or “Alternative” were being widely used. They were, without question, one of the best live shows I have ever seen.

Back in the 80s, we called those who wore the style “corn chips,” not goth. But yeah, I always thought of The Cure as punk-pop.
