Maine Capitol Police screener Craig Donahue was returning from his lunch break when he heard a "loud thud" and the sound of metal rolling.
The cylinder was about 7 inches by 5 inches with grease all over it...
Two other people saw the object fall around 12:30 p.m. near the capitol building in Augusta, according to a Maine Department of Public Safety news release. No injuries were reported.
The Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release that the FAA is "attempting to locate the source of the part which is likely from a large airliner on an international route."
In a statement to CNN on Tuesday morning, an FAA spokesperson said, "The FAA is aware of the report and is investigating."

It’s probably sort of important that they find the plane which dropped that (assumingly) engine part.

I’m guessing there are not too many extraneous parts on an airliner. it’s not like a hood ornament on a car or something.
Actually, the part looks like it has bearing races on the open end. My guess is this is part of a landing gear assembly... and probably somewhat important.

It could be one of the two spurving bearings from a turbo encabulator.
Or, it could be a Teflon coated muffler bearing.
Perhaps they should have said: Metal object narrowly misses man as it plummeted to earth from an airplane. 😋
