I have tinnitus.A few years ago I was evaluated by an ENT specialist at a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. He said that tinnitus is often a sign of hearing loss...which was confirmed in my case when I had a full hearing test. The doctor said that tinnitus is typically caused by the part of the brain that handles sound “turning up the volume” because it's not receiving signals as strong as it's accustomed to receiving.

I have tinnitus and sometimes it bothers me more than other times. I have it right now, but somehow I’m managing to not pay attention to it. I notice it most often when it’s pretty quiet. Soft music in the background seems to help.

From memory of Richard Pryor’s onstage rendition of a gazelle herd when a cheetah is approaching:
“CHEETAH!”
“What?”
“CHEE-TAH!!”
“HUH??”
“CHEEE-TAAHHH!!!”
“WHAT?!”
“THAT’S YO’ ASS!”

My tinnitus went away when I finally stopped taking ibuprofen (Motrin) to help me get to sleep.
I can make it start again just by taking two ibuprofen.
