When body-armored paramilitary agents with automatic weapons showed up to raid the house of Donald Trump, former president and rival of sitting U.S. President Joe Biden, many conservatives likened it to the beginning of a banana-republic rule in our country. Conservative columnist George Will is more measured in calling it one more colossal blunder on the part of the Biden administration. Blunder or political move, the weaponization of the legal system for political motives has caused civil wars and destroyed at least one law-based republic in history.
Rome’s republic collapsed when its politicians started using the law to eliminate opponents, a custom that began with the Marius–Sulla civil war. The guy in power used the judiciary authority of the Roman Senate to eliminate his adversaries. The intended victim would raise legions and fleets in self-defense; this took money. The contender who could raise the most troops or who was the better tactician got to be in charge. Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon because he knew that his opponents in the Senate had decided to have him executed if he returned to Rome without the protection of his legions. He had violated several Roman Republic laws during his invasion of Gaul, but there would be no fair public trial. The concept of Roman justice was dead. From that point on, might made right.
By creating a separation of powers, our American Founding Fathers attempted to prevent a recurrence of the Roman tragedy. For nearly two and a half centuries, it has worked, but the raid on Mar-a-Lago last week signifies a very dangerous potential precedent. Trump may have mishandled government documents, but the reaction of the administration’s goons was clearly disproportionately strong.

The Establishment knows that if Trump wins, he's going to clean up the Swamp (and this means the Establishment).
Ergo, good, bad, or indifferent, the Establishment/Deep State is in an existential fight. It is backed into a corner by Trump and his supporters and is fighting for its life.
We can see what it, the Establishment, is doing is unconstitutional, illegal, and a crime. But members of the Establishment are blinded by their bias. When you are fighting for your life, you think everything you are doing is justified...like self-defense.
The Establishment's bias tells them that if Trump isn't stopped, the Establishment will be cut up into little pieces. And they are right.;-)

Our next major mistake may be that once Biden is voted out of office many will conclude the threat is gone and we will relax.
It is important we recognize the threat is many layers deep with even an international element and that our nation needs an industrial-level house cleaning.
That will require determined politicians and dedicated patriots, many of whom have already sworn an oath of allegiance to defend the Constitution.

The Roman Republic was falling apart well before that. The murder of Tiberius Gracchus in the Senate during a riot and the later forced suicide of his brother before the Senate could have him executed were milestones that marked the split between the elites and the populists.
I read the article, even after the author said good things about George Will. But I still don’t get the Rubicon analogy. About all I can make out is that the author says Biden is willing to use violence against his political rivals. OK, sure. That has been obvious for a long time.
And next Trump will be indicted by an all-DemocRat DC Grand jury. A DemocRat-appointed judge will not set bail for him. Then an all-DemocRat DC jury will convict him. All that is also obvious.
George Will has to weigh from time to time so his wife will let him watch her put her socks on.
