Sigh, I guess I’m jaded. F-22s have been doing that tail slide for 20 years at least.

Got a good look at the Raptors while working at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa - mock dog-fights with the F-15s - pretty incredible aicraft.

The F15 for before it.
Having worked on 15s, yes, you are correct.

The F-104 Starfighter did it first. IIRC the first fighter with a thrust to weight ratio greater then one. Made by Lockheed.

Saw the F22 perform this move at the Chino Air show back in 2014.

thrust to weight ratio greater then one Sort of ... technically. I checked, because that didn't seem right to me. According to Wiki (hahahaha) dry weight is 14000lb, and afterburning thrust is 15600 lb. When the F15 was new, much was made of it being the first fighter with thrust/weight greater than 1.

Fighters have been doing that maneuver since before WW2. Only difference is that these modern jets have more power.
To: zeestephen
Airshow BS.
Let me know where and when it has actually been used AND proven its worth in actual close-in air combat or even at BVR, kkthx.

I think the Russian have a plane that does a tail walk like that at air shows and they call it the Cobra.
Please enlighten or correct me if I am wrong.

I have also see a maneuver like that where they just about stop going vertical and flip the nose over. I think they call it the hammerhead.

Nothing like losing 100% of your energy in a fight. This is just an airshow stunt with very little utility besides getting you killed.

Yep. It’s called the hammerhead maneuver. I saw this being done w WWII era aircraft at the Reno air show in 1975.

Why is this something?
I suppose there is something in noticing the naiveté and ignorance of those responsible for the article who’s own feeling of amazement is important to themselves.

There is a difference between energy and velocity. Energy in the flight envelope comes from three places, and velocity is just one of them.
