Every year, thousands of men gather under the Pipal trees in the local market area of Madhubani district, India’s Bihar state, and wait to be chosen by prospective brides. Called Saurath Mela or Sabhagachhi, the 9-day groom market was allegedly started by Raja Hari Singh of the Karnat dynasty over seven centuries ago to make it easier for women to find the right husband from a diverse group of men. Each groom is priced based on their capability, including their educational qualifications and family background.

Maithili women in Bihar choose their husbands. Accompanied by their families, they browse the available offers, ask for proof such as birth certificates and school certificates, and if they find someone they like (and they can afford), they start discussing the details.

Bihar’s traditional groom market, reporting that engineers, doctors and government employees are most sought after, with the young ones being the most popular. Even though dowries are officially illegal in India, and that one of the main goals of the groom market was to eliminate the dowry, it’s still common practice for young, eligible bachelors to demand considerable dowries from the family of the bride.

I have been watching Good Karma Hospital which is based in India but filmed in Sri Lanka.

They dont shy away from controversial issues...like giving up the Thalassemia twin and keeping the normal baby or the problem poor people have with having daughters because they can’t afford to marry them off.

I am just glad I don’t live in India with no air conditoning!

Is this anything like the multi-story husband store in the old joke?

btw, the show is in English so you can putter around andhave it on but it has eye popping costumes and sets so worth watching. It shows a lot of festivals so you see all kinds of costumes

I am also watching Balthazar that is in foreign language. It has to hold my interest to keep my eyes watching the subtitles

I didn’t see “You better stop crying, or I’ll give you something to cry about”, or

“If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?”

* That’s how they get you!
I still have an inner debate on whether or not to buy a warranty. There are often extra charges added on after the list price. “Service charges. Handling fees. Shipping fees.
Fee-fees!

“You better stop crying, or I’ll give you something to cry about”, or
= = =

I did not say that, but I did hear it a lot, especially after a good switching.

It’s funny how they push the warranties even on cheap items.

I bought an iron recently which cost about $20. I was asked if I wanted to buy the extended warranty. For such a cheap piece of equipment, I couldn’t see considering that.

RE: Buy a husband at the groom market

I guess, if you can buy a husband, you can also sell a husband, right?

And the price of the husband goes up or down like in a stock market depending on the husband’s condition, right?
