Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) is planning to spend over $2 million on a new math curriculum that emphasizes “ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity.”
First reported by the Washington Free Beacon, a Minneapolis school board meeting in mid-June included a presentation on the new K-5 math curriculum for the upcoming 2022-23 school year.
According to two contracts with the Math Learning Center, Minneapolis Public Schools will spend up to $1.15 million on the “diverse” math curriculum for kindergartners through second-graders, and another $1.03 million on the curriculum for third through fifth-graders, totaling $2.18 million.
The presentation stated that a “steering committee” on the Minneapolis K-12 math curriculum was specifically looking for materials that would “contribute to an understanding of ethnic, racial and cultural diversity representative of the student demographics in MPS” and “cultural and linguistically-responsive materials that differentiate for students of all abilities and backgrounds.”
Data cited in the presentation showed that Minneapolis teachers felt students seemed more “engaged with” and “excited about” the “diversity” math curriculum than other options on the table. The data was collected during a pilot implementation of each curriculum.
Roughly 70% of the teachers surveyed “agreed or strongly agreed” that student engagement and excitement was highest with the “diversity” curriculum, which was unanimously approved by the steering committee for the 2022-23 school year.
Per the Free Beacon, Superintendent Ed Graff said during the meeting that emphasizing diversity in math instruction has been a “shared priority for a number of years.”
Back in February, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) proposed new academic standards that emphasized Native American “representations” in public school math curricula.
According to an MDE document, public school math should “make sense and persevere in mathematical problem-solving experiences that are connected to place, story, cultural practices, language, and perspectives relevant to historical and contemporary Dakota and Anishinaabe communities.”
Only 35% of students in Minneapolis are meeting or exceeding math standards, according to the Minnesota Department of Education.
How to eff up math for a couple million dollars. y=mx+equity?
All answers have equal validity. Diversity, donchaknow.
I see an error in your question, it should be what about the other 160%?

Garland Wreaths son in law is the one who sells such curriculum.

.Grifting AND Grooming, KA CHING !!!
Math is simply a way of writing reality on paper. ‘Diversity’ doesn’t apply.
I suppose it’s only fair if a number self identifies as a letter we must yield to diversity .... same for letters self identify as a number.
Such is life in the year MMXXII.

In the early 60s my very good 6th grade math teacher told us he was going to try out the “new math” curriculum. After a couple of weeks he gave up and went back to real math. My class was for kids that would likely go to college and he knew what would help us and what wouldn’t.

I remember a bunch of the school district penguins coming into our math class in an early grade and making a glorious announcement about how we were going to be taught “new math” and it would be the greatest thing ever.
We were kept together at least up into high school.
I don’t know how the others fared but I struggled in math all the way through college and was amazed to learn simple things in college that I had never gotten in govt school.
Considering the level of the standards that the 35% is meeting, I’d estimate 98% of the students are drooling on themselves
I remember “new math”. Sucked.
Blame that on common core math.
This will cause more and more parents, who have children in the Government Indoctrination Centers (GICs) (aka public schools, aka government schools), to leave it and send their children to homeschools, parochial schools, or private schools.
What kind of nonsense is this? Numbers are numbers. No diversity is necessary.
If you buy 10 slaves from the African warlord of a rival tribe and then sell the 10 slaves in America and 1 becomes a millionaire basketball player and 1 becomes a football player then how many are left to loot the stores?
Ah yes, Xi Jinping will pleased.
Saxon math and homeschooling
