A former female employee of an Iowa jail is facing criminal charges after authorities say she engaged in sexual activity with an inmate.
Investigators say that former Tama County Jail Employee Kayla Bergom, 27, is being accused of engaging in sexual activity with an inmate in a utility closet and in the recreation yard of the jail on multiple occasions while she was an employee..
Bergom is facing three counts of sexual misconduct.

Usually, the woman is simply fired.
The idea of women guards of male inmates is a bad one.
Not exactly an uncommon occurrence unfortunately.
Prisons are full of master manipulators.
And this is one of many reasons I’ve never believed it was a good idea to have female guards in a male prison.
I saw it for 5 years while in my church’s prison ministry and I was never comfortable with it. WAY too many scenarios come to mind that can only end badly and this story is a good example.
Women look for a reason to have sex, and men look for a place to have sex. The winner in this matter was the criminal. He had already lost his freedom. Now it is her turn.
Her reason must have been that she was in love with the criminal. Why can’t we all just love who we want to love? How much longer will it be before threesomes are getting married? It’s coming to a neighborhood near you soon.
Depends on timeline. Was a guard. Soon to be an inmate.

Not in my state. The prison facilities I went into always had a poster displayed in the metal detector room that advertised “DONT BE ONE OF THESE”.
Below that we’re pictures of ex-prison employees (usually guards) and the crime that got them put into prison.
Usually introducing contraband into a facility but more than once I saw female guards that are incarcerated for exactly what this story describes.
So extra charges for the inmate? Why not?
Criminal charges seem harsh. I can see a lot of advantages for a woman having an affair with an inmate. For one, she knows where he is at night.
Perhaps it is different in federal facilities.
Oh the prison facilities I was in WERE state prisons.
One of the problems I saw was the pay. You get what you pay for and that includes what you pay your employees.
Last year a raise was approved for state prison guards.....the increase raised the annual salary to $35,000 a year....that’s just under $17 an hour. Add to that 12 hour shifts all to work around dangerous criminals and your not gonna attract the best candidates.
The little personal knowledge I have was about federal prisons.

If the female knows how to behave, it’s not a problem. Male inmates usually behave MUCH better for a respected female officer than a male. I worked nights, and one night the sergeant I was working with was visited by his wife who had been a guard in a different male facility, but was fired for “inappropriate behavior” with an inmate. I walked into the sergeant’s office and she was going at it with one of our inmates WITH HER HUSBAND LOOKING ON. He lost his job too.
