The Norwalk-LaMirada Unified School District in Southern California planned to vote on a program that would allow Planned Parenthood to open a facility at John Glenn High School in Norwalk. But they didn’t anticipate the overwhelmingly negative response from parents.
Originally, the school district planned to have a vote on the issue during a school board meeting on July 18th. But in a short press release, they announced the vote would be postponed, with no rescheduled date given. It is believed that the widespread anger from parents over the plan may have led to the proposal being abandoned.
If the Los Angeles County School District does eventually approve the five-year contract between the high school and Planned Parenthood, the program would need to be renewed every five years. The collaboration was created with support from LA County officials, including the Board of Supervisors, the Department of Public Health, the Department of Mental Health, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
According to Planned Parenthood’s website, “The on-campus Wellbeing Centers… will eventually open on fifty high school campuses in L.A. County and will offer services including health and wellness education services, sexual health services, peer leadership opportunities, parent education and support, and more.”
The “Wellbeing Centers” would be permitted to test students for sexually transmitted diseases, provide treatment for STDs, prescribe and dispense medication, and provide contraception of various kinds, including birth control pills and IUDs. Abortion and hormone replacement therapy are not listed as services, but the centers will refer to other Planned Parenthood locations, according to the proposal.
In California, minors can undergo abortions without parental consent, but Planned Parenthood claims it “will encourage students to involve their families in decision making.” When students are treated at the “Wellbeing Centers,” on the high school campus, their medical records would be maintained by Planned Parenthood. Those records would not be accessible to parents or guardians unless the student gives written permission.
Planned Parenthood has a history of fighting against parental notification laws and views parents as an impediment to reaching students.
President and founder of Parents Defending Education, Nicole Neily, told Fox News Digital, “Families and taxpayers should be horrified that the Norwalk-La Mirada USD is considering a partnership with Planned Parenthood.” She said, “To add insult to injury, there is no way for parents to EVER obtain this information, as the contract asserts that all medical records are to be maintained by Planned Parenthood.”
She continued, “For over 100 years, federal courts have consistently found that parents – and not schools – maintain primary decision-making authority over their children, particularly when it comes to medical care. The Norwalk-La Mirada school board should be ashamed that this contract is even up for consideration – and be mindful of their significant legal exposure should it be ratified.”
