If you look up thread, I posted a picture of a nearby cave.
It’s very similar (to my untrained eye) to your Carlsbad Caverns.
Much of Israel has extensive karsts (underground voids that do not have a natural opening like a cave), so much so that people have been looking for them and living in them (and getting water from them) for 5000 years.
There is typically required ground-penetrating sonar before any kind of heavy construction, but this is a very rural area so they probably got away without an inspection. Very pretty, too. Much like California’s wine country.

I lived on Malta for a few years, and there were many cave locations that go back thousands of years in history. The term “karst” is new to me; Thanks.
