How does one become the arch-enemy of the elite thought-shapers of 21st century western civilization? By saying things like this:

He has been saying such things for a long time. I recall a number of threads during the 0bama years where many, right here on FR, remarked how much better Putin sounded than our own leadership at the time.
Putin is not saying anything new here. Crimea was a warning shot under 0bama. Putin is not fighting a gentleman’s war this time. Putin has identified his enemy and it is the Progressive Left and its impending imposition on the entire planet. Much of what Putin is saying cannot be said right here in America anymore without being censored or removed from social media. It is an interesting dichotomy at work here.

I think the biggest difference here is Putin understands some ideologies need to be snuffed out. Putin is not bound by rules of engagement of civilized war.
Is this a well-crafted speech of propaganda for the West’s consumption. Written to elicit self-reflection and disunity? Possibly. But Putin has been sounding this way now for several decades and he is not wrong. He is not fighting against freedom/democracy, he is fighting what it has become.
