The $100 million retrofit project – partially paid for by taxpayers as part of a resolution of litigation – was supposed to keep the building from sinking and tilting more and stabilize property values. But since work began on installing support piles in May of last year, the problems have gotten worse, not better. To stem the damage, engineers opted to cut the number of new foundation support piles from 52 to 18.
...As it stands, with the additional tilting since work on the underground wall along Fremont started in May, the tower is now leaning at least 29 inches at the top at the northwest corner.
That leaves a shrinking margin for error, given Hamburger’s caution that the tower’s safety systems -- like elevators and sewage lines -- could stop working should the tower lean 40 inches or more.

“There’s no question that the fix has made things worse,” said Bob Pyke, a veteran geotechnical engineer who has advised Caltrans and federal agencies on large construction projects.
First half was great.

Oh those clever Californians.
—”Almost 2-1/2 feet out of plumb!”
Yes but the total height is about 650 feet, hardly noticeable.

You cannot see it from my house!

Why don’t they just get a big rope and tie it to the other building.
Shit. Why do I have to think of everything?
“Why do I have to think of everything?”
hehehe
Really? A guy named Hamburger is running the show? Not being inspired here. Phone call-—Captain Hamburger pick up the phone. Captain Hamburger should call the Florida guys who fixed that condo. Or maybe the Florida guys who collapsed the bridge on the highway? Or maybe the Italians-—they know how to handle a crooked building. My suggestion is to drive those 100 million dollar bills straight into the foundation sideways until the whole thing straightens up. Cheap fix. All they need is a lot of hammers.
yep, some things cannot be fixed.
Can this tower really ever be fixed????
I’m no engineer of course. But wonder if they are throwing good money after bad.
Just get a couple of bottle jacks and lift up on the corner.
——partially paid for by taxpayers-——
How are the taxpayer responsible for this building tilting.
Probably hired woke engineers instead of real engineers.
Kinda like Kansai International Airport.
I’ve been watching this one on and off since the initial publicity.
No friggin way I’d have gotten involved. Lawsuits will ensue regardless of outcome.
Some often wonder what the result is of affirmative action employees.
Maybe this building was never supposed to last?
Maybe contractors with bent noses stole everything but the kitchen sink and put high insurance policies on it banking on the Big One to cover all the fraud.
Or maybe I’ve watched too many Sopranos reruns....
Love it and needed that.
