Residents of New York City captured photos and video as Monday night's sunset aligned with the street grid of Manhattan in a phenomenon known as "Manhattanhenge."
Manhattanhenge, which was dubbed as such by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson as a take on Britain's Stonehenge, created a spectacle Monday evening as the setting sun lowered in perfect alignment with the streets
Tuesday night's sunset will feature a similar spectacle.
Manhattanhenge occurs four times a year, twice in the spring and twice in the summer. Tuesday evening's sunset will mark the last of the year.
Honestly, I hated this when I worked in Manhattan. If you’re driving it sucks.
But nothing is worse than driving the LIE or the Northern Parkway on Long Island with the sun staring right at you.
Only urbanites whose idea of a wilderness is Manhattan’s Central Park think “Manhattanhenge” isn’t outweighed hype.
The affirmative action celebrity scientist keeps his name in the news.
YUGE.
Manhattanites are so insular.
Like the former president?
Yes. Life in penthouses does that to people.
Honestly, when I’ve driven near Boston post-Big Dig, 95/93/128 rival ANYTHING in the NY metro area for congestion. <0H However, Beltway and 95 near Stamford are the 5th Circle of Hell.
Southern Connecticut (where I live now) is surprisingly rural once you get off the main highways. I love driving those roads home when I get to the Westport station - Easton, Redding, Newtown.
Too bad the majority of Manhattenites don’t think there is anything west of the Hudson.
Let them starve, I say.
What the heck is that in the hole in front of the “ONLY” on the street, a cell phone?
It’s very cool to see as a pedestrian. Saw it in 2017,18,19 and was in Manhattan for the 40 year anniversary of the great blackout when midtown went dark for 10 hours in 100 plus temps on the pavement. Fortunately my suite had a balcony on the 25th floor we chilled on it drinking beers watching the chaos unfolds below us.
I’ll take my half acre of 5 foot tall Shasta daisies that are in full bloom right now. There was a blacktail buck in velvet out in the middle this morning with just his head showing. It was beautiful.
Exactly. If I was suddenly forced to live in ANY ‘Major Metro Area’ I’d put a bullet in my head. And, gladly!
Future News Report: These tall structures must have had religious significance that were recently found in the New New York area after it was recently discovered in the year 4022 according to archeologists.
I would have gone up to the top of one of those buildings to get a clear shot of the sunset. Why waste a photo between buildings cutting off the view?
Oh, that's just a natural formation.
