CEO Tony Staffieri said the failure followed "a maintenance update in our core network".
Transport, banking and emergency services were all hit by Friday's blackout, with 911 hotlines and bank ATMs left unavailable.
Canadians flocked to coffee shops and libraries to find a connection.
The service outage began at 04:30 local time (08:30 GMT) on Friday and lasted for more than 15 hours, but most services have now been restored.
Mr Staffieri said the maintenance work "caused some of our routers to malfunction early Friday morning".
The outage had a huge effect on a wide range of services across Canada, serving as a reminder of how reliant society has become on modern communications.
Many 911 services reported difficulties with incoming calls and hospitals asked on-call staff to come into work until the issue was resolved.

It seems to me that they always upgrade for surveillance reasons when these outages happen.
Call me cynical.
If anyone wants on or off the list, kindly FReepmail me. Thanks!
White conservatives hit hardest.
Cyber Polygon?
The Cyber Polygon 2022 Cyber pandemic simulation was supposed to take place today, July 8 2022. Organized by Bi-Zone with support from, you guessed it, the World Economic Forum.
Either it was a software upload from FedGouvCan or the cost of the ‘maintenance’ correction was a ransom paid to hackers.
A few months ago we were called in for a major outage at a large ISP. I thought it was interesting they were calling for cybersecurity assistance for an ISP. The ISP was infiltrated months prior without detecting the threat, and they slowly established a presence across their network including on customer endpoints. The outage was a calculated move to allow the bad actor time to get out undetected.
Most governments have taps available to them inside ISPs. The ISPs are not required to divulge this information. In the event of an executed warrant, they are not obligated to tell you if you’re the subject of a tap. I’d imagine in Canada, freedom is even easier to subjugate.
Canada’s internet outage caused by ‘lack of maintenance’
Hmmm….No duct tape…. Might be an imposter…
Testing to see if they can black out whole areas?
We have three or four big telecom companies up here, one had the massive outage, the others did not. Luckily we have our phone, internet and TV on a different provider and didn’t lose connections to any of them.
The main impact was on finances, up here there’s a system called Interac which is an all-banks debit card setup, that crashed but VISA and Mastercard did not crash, so as long as you had those cards, no problem.
I had to laugh, a guy came on from that company and basically said they had figured out that the system crashed because the system crashed. Umm.
Maintenance...riiight.
Sounds like BS to me.
And just that easily nobody buys anything or goes anywhere. Believe me, it’s been noticed.
That same day, my son in NW Nevada called in the early evening to tell me the internet and some cell services were down in his area all day long. At 4PM PDT, his cell service was back up (AT&T) but the internet was still down.
Mediacom in Iowa also had interrupted internet.
Large quantities of computers are very weird things. Last spring they did a “power upgrade” to the building my company is in. This involved replacing the UPS in one lab and wiring the other lab up to it. Boom boom everything seemed to go fine for 2 days. Then the routers that control one of our domains started flaking out, one port after another failed over the course of 3 days, just dead. Not the other domains, not even the the domain that this domain is a child of. And not all ports at once, just a random port every couple of hours. Exactly the type of thing anybody in IT will tell you is impossible, and couldn’t possibly be related to switching where the power comes from. But it happened. Had to do some deep re-configuring to get most of the routers back, one just had to be replaced outright.
So, yeah, feces occurs.
