BALTIMORE (AP) — A man was shot and killed after he swung a baseball bat at a person who cleans windshields at intersections for cash, Baltimore’s police commissioner said Thursday.

The 48-year-old man who was shot was driving through an intersection near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in the afternoon when he encountered so-called squeegee workers and had a heated interaction, Commissioner Michael Harrison told reporters.

Squeegee workers, also known as squeegee kids, consist mostly of teens from low-income neighborhoods who clean drivers’ windshields at intersections in exchange for money. Some drivers in Baltimore have complained about them.

The man drove through the intersection, parked his car and came back with a baseball bat, Harrison said.

“He swung the bat at one or more of those squeegee workers. In return, one of the squeegee workers pulled out a gun and fired, striking this male victim,” the commissioner said, adding that police didn’t know if he hit anyone with the bat.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name wasn’t released.

The workers fled the scene on foot, Harrison said. No arrests had been made as of late afternoon.

A witness told The Baltimore Sun that he saw a squeegee worker shoot the man after he got out of his car with the bat. Cody Bro, who was visiting Baltimore for a convention, said he saw the driver “arguing with one of the squeegee people — the people who squeegee your windows.”

the best solution is to stay out of an area that allows these filthy, stealing, panhandlers to accost people and damage your car or person.

drop the money on the ground and whack the panhandler with your door as they bend down the pick it up. Be sure to say " oops,my bad brother, sorry, you o.k?. " then high tail it out of there.

What an idiot. He was asking for it. A bat can kill a person. Even a squeegee creep has a right to self-defense.

That said, the gun was probably illegal; equal justice would demand charges for that. But I'm not holding my breath.

Baltimore is a dump. The wealthier people there are among the worst - a few years ago, there was a proposal to put the MD Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Federal Hill, a wealthy enclave of Baltimore. The lousy residents fought it tooth and nail and got it moved. Let them enjoy the decline in their property values; they deserve the dump they live in.

Why get out of the car at all ? If his intent was to harm them he may have wanted to consider running them down. Vehicular assault isn’t a strange concept in some segments of society.

Sounds like the 90 days are over. But if we can believe their posted results, it's a start:

MOAAME serves as the lead agency responsible for the case management and intensive outreach to disconnected young men and boys. Since early 2020 MOAAME has:

• Identified 186 disconnected youth who squeegee
• Re-engaged 43 youth into school
• Secured birth certificates, social security cards and/ or IDs for 29 youth
• Employed 27 youth who distributed 10,000 meals as part of the city’s Covid-19 response
• Registered 73 youth in the summer YouthWorks program
• Placed 39 youth with permanent employers
• Connected 50 youth with a Credible Mentor for intentional guidance and support

Of course, it may be only the core 75 or so who are counted and re-counted in every one of those categories; but that's still something.

Nothing in the secular liberal agenda will ever subsitute for a society that participates actively in marriage before sex; substance-free living, and orthodox Christian or Jewish observation as a family.
