The first time I noticed a problem was while attempting to post to the FReepathon thread, using one of my donation request graphics from my documents folder. I'm no longer able to just copy and paste them.

When I first click on one, an image with "WORD" briefly appears. Then a screen comes up saying "Let's get started with Microsoft 365". It gives a choice of ~buy Microsoft 365~ or ~start your free trial~.

When I close that screen, another one comes up, offering the one month free trial. When I close that window, a bar appears near the top of my document folder, stating "YOUR WORD IS IN READ-ONLY MODE. To create or edit Office files in this app, you'll need to buy Office". Next to that it gives two choices to click on. Either "Get Office", or "Use free on Office.com".

The best I can gather from all this is that I can no longer just "copy and paste" my stuff on to the FReepathon thread. Microsoft wants to sell me something in order to do so. I haven't yet tried clicking on the "Use free on Office.com" button, because I wanted to get some input from tech-savvy FReepers as to whether or not that would be a satisfactory way to go. Your expertise has been valuable in the past, and I'm hoping for good results once again. Thanks in advance.

“graphics from my documents folder. I’m no longer able to just copy and paste them.”

FR never allowed copy/paste graphics ...

It’s your file associations. It’s got images tied to Word. You need to tie them to whatever you were using before.

You might have had an old standalone version of Microsoft Office installed on your old computer, that is not reinstalled on your new computer.

Microsoft moved to an online subscription version of Office, which is what you are being prompted for. If you still have the original standalone installation media, you can reinstall the older version of Office.

If you got your thumbdrive from Amazon, you might have gotten burned. They have been flogging some p.o.s. drives that are supposedly in the Terabyte range but really only have 2 Gb.

The way to know is to check out their reviews. The scam thumbdrives are just savaged as scams.

Can you access Microsoft Cloud with Windows 8?

If yes, that is your best choice. Load into the cloud with Windows 8. Download into Windows 11.

I recall reading a couple months ago that Windows 8 and Windows 11 are incompatible.

Right the photo and use the “Open With” function, then click your favorite editor such as “Paint” or “Phot”

At the bottom of your possibilities will be a box you can check to make that program the default...

You are correct. I had the same problem. My solution: Convert all Word365 docs to the FREE OpenOffice Writer app.

OpenOffice download page: https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Once you install OpenOffice Writer: Open it, Goto File >>>Wizards>>> Document Converter and select your conversion options. Document Converter will allow you to convert an entire Word365 folder to OpenOffice Writer documents

I have occasionally run into this kind of problem. I offer the following not as a guaranteed fix but as something you might try.
In the old days, windows had both wordpad and Notepad. These were very primitive, Fred Flintstone grade text editors/word processors. You might try to copy and paste your current document into notepad. Notepad has no fancy anything, They are just a primitive text editor. However by transferring into notepad, you will blow away all of the Hidden HTML tags that are possibly causing you problems. You will lose your paragraphs and other formatting features. However, you can go and enter line feeds and the like. You might have better luck copying and pasting the Primitive notepad version of your document into FR. Modern versions of windows may not even have these early Windows programs at all. Thus you might have to go out onto the web and download notepad. I think I had to do that to get this particular job done.

I went through this last year.

Your new Windows system does not have an installed, licensed copy of MS Office. Try and reload the old copy from CD/DVD and see if Win 11 will even allow it.

In my case I had to log into my MS Office 365 account and manage the desktops where I have my Office registered to. Good luck if you can’t remember that account name and password.

MS is trying to move all Windows users over to a model where you pay by the month for using their software. They get monthly revenue, you don’t really need to worry too much about upgrades, but you never own any software and pay for it forever.

I would start the move over to Libre Office or Open Office, if you can’t find the old copy of Office or are not allowed to reload it.

Just wait until you get told that you really do not own your Windows 11. It’s coming.

I’m confused. I’m not aware that you can post graphics or files directly from your computer to FR. For graphics, they need to be saved on the web and then linked to with an IMG tag. If you want text, you open the text file on your computer and highlight the text you want, right click and choose copy, return to FR and choose past the same way. (Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are the shortcuts).

If you are saying that you cant open your files, you need an Office application like Libre Office (free) or Microsoft Office (365 latest version and is paid).

If that’s not what you are asking, you need to be more specific so I can understand your problem.

In addition to the Open/Libre Office suggestions already offered.
(The above is IMneverHO the most flexible and permanent solution.)

You could try copying a link from one of your own FR posts.

While using your BROWSER viewing one of your posts with the link in it:
Right click on one of your links and select ‘copy link’.
Then paste it into a FR post and edit the text if desired.
