My old laptop (with Windows 8.1) was showing its' age, so I recently replaced it with a new HP (running Windows 11). I transferred all my pictures, documents, videos etc. via a thumb drive and thought everything would be fine. I was in for an awakening.
When I first click on one, an image with "WORD" briefly appears. Then a screen comes up saying "Let's get started with Microsoft 365". It gives a choice of ~buy Microsoft 365~ or ~start your free trial~.
When I close that screen, another one comes up, offering the one month free trial. When I close that window, a bar appears near the top of my document folder, stating "YOUR WORD IS IN READ-ONLY MODE. To create or edit Office files in this app, you'll need to buy Office". Next to that it gives two choices to click on. Either "Get Office", or "Use free on Office.com".
The best I can gather from all this is that I can no longer just "copy and paste" my stuff on to the FReepathon thread. Microsoft wants to sell me something in order to do so. I haven't yet tried clicking on the "Use free on Office.com" button, because I wanted to get some input from tech-savvy FReepers as to whether or not that would be a satisfactory way to go. Your expertise has been valuable in the past, and I'm hoping for good results once again. Thanks in advance.
Pinging you to pick your brain about this.
open in another application maybe?
You can copy and paste documents into FR threads???
I always just find them online and use html tags IMG SRC
To do a proper copy you can highlight the icon for the file and use keybaord shortcut CTRL-C to copy it to your clipboard, then CTRL-V to paste it where you want the copy to go. Or you can right-mouseclick the file, and select copy from the fly-out menu (it may be buried under “More Options” in the latest version of Windows-11 right-click menu).
If it’s a .DOC or .XLS(x), then it will want you to have a (paid for) working version of Office apps to open and edit them.
Get a Mac.
Just kidding, sort of, but now i can follow this thread.
here is an alternative to word- called libre office- it works with word documents-
“graphics from my documents folder. I’m no longer able to just copy and paste them.”
FR never allowed copy/paste graphics ...
It’s your file associations. It’s got images tied to Word. You need to tie them to whatever you were using before.
Microsoft moved to an online subscription version of Office, which is what you are being prompted for. If you still have the original standalone installation media, you can reinstall the older version of Office.

If you got your thumbdrive from Amazon, you might have gotten burned. They have been flogging some p.o.s. drives that are supposedly in the Terabyte range but really only have 2 Gb.
The way to know is to check out their reviews. The scam thumbdrives are just savaged as scams.
If yes, that is your best choice. Load into the cloud with Windows 8. Download into Windows 11.
I recall reading a couple months ago that Windows 8 and Windows 11 are incompatible.
Right the photo and use the “Open With” function, then click your favorite editor such as “Paint” or “Phot”
At the bottom of your possibilities will be a box you can check to make that program the default...

Don't use Word to do simple text copy/paste operations like those needed for FreeRepublic posts. I use Notepad.
You are correct. I had the same problem. My solution: Convert all Word365 docs to the FREE OpenOffice Writer app.
OpenOffice download page: https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
Once you install OpenOffice Writer: Open it, Goto File >>>Wizards>>> Document Converter and select your conversion options. Document Converter will allow you to convert an entire Word365 folder to OpenOffice Writer documents
I'm probably not using the correct terminology for what I do. I too use the IMG SRC tags, as part of creating a variety of the fund-raising posts that I use on the FReepathon. I incorporated that into info that includes the donation link, and then saved those kinds of creations in my documents folder for later repeated use. All I had to do was copy and paste, without recreating the whole thing each time. I can't copy and paste those existing creations anymore. (Hope that makes a little bit of sense.)
I may not understand what you're trying to do there. But if you're trying to post a graphic image, FreeRepublic doesn't have user image storage. You have to have placed the image somewhere on an internet/public webserver, and post the <IMG SRC="https://....."> string into your post.
Or maybe I don't know what you meant by doing a copy/paste on a graphic image for an FR post.
I have occasionally run into this kind of problem. I offer the following not as a guaranteed fix but as something you might try.
In the old days, windows had both wordpad and Notepad. These were very primitive, Fred Flintstone grade text editors/word processors. You might try to copy and paste your current document into notepad. Notepad has no fancy anything, They are just a primitive text editor. However by transferring into notepad, you will blow away all of the Hidden HTML tags that are possibly causing you problems. You will lose your paragraphs and other formatting features. However, you can go and enter line feeds and the like. You might have better luck copying and pasting the Primitive notepad version of your document into FR. Modern versions of windows may not even have these early Windows programs at all. Thus you might have to go out onto the web and download notepad. I think I had to do that to get this particular job done.
