Low back pain seriously affects the quality of life and increases the economic burden on families and society[1,2]. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is the main pathogenic factor of low back pain, but its pathological mechanism has not yet been elucidated[3]. Therefore, exploring the pathological mechanism of IDD and seeking new methods for the prevention and treatment of degenerative disc diseases is of great significance to human health.
Nucleus pulposus (NP) cells play an important role by secreting a large amount of extracellular matrix (ECM) such as aggrecan and collagen type II to maintain the normal physiological function of the intervertebral disc (IVD) under physiological conditions. However, NP cells are terminal cells with low proliferation ability and no differentiation and self-renewal ability. In degenerative IVD, the number of NP cells is reduced, and their function is impaired, leading to a decrease in ECM secretion and aggravation of IDD. Endogenous repair is a specific repair mediated by tissue-specific stem cells and has been found to exist in a variety of tissues, such as the skin, liver and nervous system[4,5]. In 2007, Risbud et al[6] isolated and identified NP-derived mesenchymal stem cells (NPMSCs) in degenerative IVD, which provided a basis for the endogenous repair of IDD. However, the unfavorable microenvironment of degenerative IVD, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and increased catabolism, leads to increased senescence and apoptosis of NPMSCs, which seriously affects endogenous repair[7]. Therefore, rescuing the activity of NPMSCs and delaying cell senescence is of great significance to alleviate IDD.
Urolithin is produced by intestinal microbial metabolism from foods rich in ellagitannins (pomegranate, strawberry, walnut, raspberry, etc.)[8]. A previous study found that UA could exert antiapoptotic and antiaging effects on NP cells[14,15].
In this study, we investigated whether UA could alleviate NPMSCs senescence in vitro and in IDD animal models in vivo.

Note that a combination of glycine and N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) gas been shown to bring back low performing cells in a similar way, but does so by enhancing glutathione, while Urolithin A does so by creating new mitochondria in cells to replace dysfunctional ones.
Several GlyNAC and Urolithin A study write ups were previously posted by me, if interested in further information. You can make your own inexpensive GlyNAC, but Urolithin A is something you need to buy from Nestle, as you can the GlyNAC, from their Celltrient brand.
I hope the information proves helpful and that you can grasp something useful from this. I know I have just recently started taking both to see if I can see an improvement in my first back-related disc issue.
Thanks for the info. Most people could reduce their back pain by losing weight. They could also eliminate sleep apnea by losing weight. And bring their diabetes under control. We’re too fat, plain and simple.
AND by strengthening back and core muscles (and ligaments) which hold the bulging part of the disc in place. Being fat and weak is a bad combo.

“For Degenerative Disc Disease or for back/skeletal injuries or arthritis, I would try a chicken sternum (CS) cartilage capsule per day for life or at least for 5 years. I am currently in my upper 60’s.
Chicken sternum has type 2 collagen in it which rebuilds cartilage.
Something tore next to my spine in the mid-2000s as I lifted a 7-gallon water jug. My back felt unhinged from then on.
My knees and thumbs were also loose in their sockets at the time, so I started taking a chicken sternum capsule mornings, and it rebuilt and filled in the cartilage in my knees/thumbs in say 4 months. The joints became tight again and subtle but noticeable improvement started within a few days.
However, my unhinged back healed some years later. It could have been 2 years or longer because I didn’t notice when my back actually healed, but only that it has healed from the unhinged feeling.
I still take a capsule of chicken sternum mornings, although CS has never has healed my injured shoulder, but the shoulder is not painful.
I reason that the cartilage sternum of a bird acts as a shock absorber for the bird’s flapping wings. So the bird’s cartilage sternum needs to repair and rebuild rapidly each day. So that is why I think CS rebuilds hips, knees and other joints so well, except maybe shoulders.
I knew a lady in 2016 who canceled her hip replacement (confirmed by x-ray), and her friend canceled his painful knee’s replacement after they both took CS capsules for 4 months. He was walking around as normal as if his knee had never hurt, whereas before he was not able to stand in line at the buffet without sitting down.
Instead of the current BioCell brand of CS extract, Swanson carried the kollaGen brand of chicken sternum capsules back then, kollaGen which is now carried by PipingRock:
https://www.pipingrock.com/chicken-collagen?keywords=chicken cartilage&qid=1647534436
I wanted to try the newer BioCell brand of CS extract, so that is what I take now.
The Swanson CS I most recently bought for about $17.50 per bottle by using RetailMeNot. Or the current 25% off sale at Swanson would yield the same $17.24 price, which is normally $22.99 per bottle.
I figure that it only makes sense to take chicken sternum capsules to feed my skeletal system and joints. The bottles suggest more capsules per day or per dose, although just one capsule per day of CS was always enough to produce results for me.”

Do you know of any/many Urolithin A supplements labeled something other than Pomegranate Extract?
.
So where do I sign up to get some.
A friend of mine wiped out on his Harley about 30 yrs ago. His disk damage wasn’t caught right away, Andy the time it was, his doctor told him that it was going to bother him later in life. Today he can hardly walk.
I will be passing this info on to him.

Pomegranate extract is not Urolithin A. 40% of people do have the ability to convert pomegranate into some Urolithin A, but it is entirely based upon bacteria in a person’s gut. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to know if you have the right bacteria, or not, and to supplement the ones found to help is not really possible, at this time.
The patented form is called “Mitopure,” and is available at retail, here:
However, Nestle uses it in their Celltrient Strength supplement:
https://www.nestlehealthscience.com/brands/celltrient
This is available, less expensively, from Amazon under a subscription.
Ping to you.
Thank you. Those are the only two I am aware and they both use Mitopure. You confirmed my suspicions.

And thanks, ConservativeMind for your diligence in finding and posting these interesting and informative health-related reports.
Thanks bigly for the info at Earth Clinic- that article goes on and on forever, the NEW info on thiamine(B-1) and interleukin 17 and all of the diseases that it helps is astounding. It recommends 200 mg daily divided into two doses daily is a good deal more than what is already in my MV.
Sir, I just got in some BioCell and UC-II forms of chicken sternum.
I will see how these work.
Thank you!
Very good.
Would be helpful for to post both here and on EarthClinic, results for the edification of others with same issues. Am curious as well.
Thank you for posting these articles and the ping list.
