The battle of Sheetz versus Wawa in the Midstate (PA) continues and it is not going anywhere anytime soon as Wawa announces plans of doubling its store count in Central Pennsylvania over the next three to five years.

According to the store’s press release, the plan is to expand its footprint along the Susquehanna River, with its first store opening as early as 2024. There is even a potential for up to 40 additional stores in Midstate counties over the next few years. Get daily news, weather, breaking news and alerts straight to your inbox! “With a commitment to fulfilling lives, we’re thrilled to continue our growth and expansion in our existing markets to provide quality fresh food, beverages, and support to the community,” said John Poplawski, Vice President of Real Estate for Wawa. “In addition, Wawa’s continued expansion will mean even more convenience and new jobs in the Central Pennsylvania community.”

On the east coast, Wawa continues to open stores and plans to open 54 new stores in 2022.

200 First Street Associates, a commercial development company, says Wawa is planning for Enola in Cumberland County to be among the first new locations.

Provco, in collaboration with 200 First Street Associates, has submitted plans to East Pennsboro Township for approval. Details regarding the location were not available in recent East Pennsboro Township Planning Commission meeting minutes.

“We are thrilled that Wawa has selected our development to expand its footprint in Central Pennsylvania. Wawa and its development partner, Provco Group, recognize the unique benefits of this development,” said Sil Lutkewitte, President, 200 First Street Associates. “Not only will they be able to serve East Pennsboro Township, but also the Reserve at Summerdale’s 260 apartments and the highly travelled corridor of Routes 11/15 and I-81.”

I’m not on the road selling anymore (SoFla), but Wawa’s gas prices were always cheaper than most retailers down here.

As for the food, it’s much better than subway, w/ options galore. And it’s a gas station. Like I said, I’m not on the road anymore, but when I am near a Wawa, I gas up and buy 5 cans of chew because I know it’s cheaper than anywhere else (sans Costco or Sam’s).

Working for them is a different experience than being a customer.

Yeah, good point. But the Wawa workers around my way seem happy. Or at least not pi$$ed off.

I have a suspicion that Sheetz was the subject of Karen complaints over its mask enforcement policy early in COVID back in 2020. The ones I frequented had prominent signs on them that said something to this effect: “Government regulations require all customers to wear a face mask. If you aren’t wearing one, we will assume you have a medical condition that prevents you from doing so. Thank you.”

I thought it was an awesome way to get around the idiotic government mandates. Unfortunately, that only lasted about two weeks before they got very strict about it.

I remember standing at an intersection in Tucson in the ‘70s and counting seven Circle-Ks. Of course you could see pretty far in that flat land.

Wawa has no competition near me — the Seven Elevens are pigsties, and there are no Sheetz to be seen. A candy bar is $2.50. Pretty much only go there at night, after 9pm and before 6am.

Thirty years ago, the sandwiches were a loss leader, and were great, now they are cheap on the meat, and use garbage rolls. I never buy pizza or sandwiches at any sort of chain — there are too many really good independents.
