The inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in mid- to later life is linked to a near doubling in the risk of death from any cause within the next 10 years, finds research.
To improve standardization of the test, participants were asked to place the front of the free foot on the back of the opposite lower leg, while keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead. Up to three attempts on either foot were permitted.
In all, around 1 in 5 (20.5%; 348) participants failed to pass the test. The inability to do so rose in tandem with age, more or less doubling at subsequent 5 year intervals from the age of 51-55 onwards.
There were no clear temporal trends in the deaths, or differences in the causes, between those able to complete the test and those who weren't able to do so.
But the proportion of deaths among those who failed the test was significantly higher: 17.5% vs. 4.5%, reflecting an absolute difference of just under 13%.
In general, those who failed the test had poorer health: a higher proportion were obese, and/or had heart disease, high blood pressure, and unhealthy blood fat profiles. And type 2 diabetes was 3 times as common in this group: 38% vs. around 13%.
After accounting for age, sex, and underlying conditions, an inability to stand unsupported on one leg for 10 seconds was associated with an 84% heightened risk of death from any cause within the next decade.

And here I thought that everyone’s risk of death was 100%. I better change my finances for retirement is there is a chance I can avoid death.
Another new government grant funded ‘study’. I’m shocked.
Can someone tell me where we are with the latest ‘study’ on one cup of coffee or wine per day please?
1 out of 10 died when they fell over while trying to stand on one leg.....
“I will try it. Eyes closed is more difficult.”
Is the difficulty standing because of balance or strength such as ankle strength? If balance I’d say practice would make you better at it.
I can’t do the alphabet backwards sober!
I take it you have to be sober when you try this?
= = =
Or do you need a keg to stand on.

People who can, have been practicing for the DUI stop.

Maybe we need a little song, like the ABC song
abcdefg — hijklmnop — qrs — tuv— wx and y and z
Specking of balance, I caught Covid last Wednesday morning when to sit on the toilet when I bent over I leaned to far and drove my head into the tile floor, I now have a black left eye and it leached over to the right now I look like a Racoon, my wife said shes buying me a helmet at 84yo.
iows, we are going to die eventually....
“I’m not quite sure how helpful this leg-balancing information is”.
I agree. Most very old people couldn’t do it.
I’m working on 72 and 5 seconds was it or me.
iows, we are going to die eventually....
lol
Last time I read this was about two years ago. I quit after about three minutes a side. That was barefoot. I had a trainer who told me if you have shoes on it doesn’t really count. I was on a thin carpet, though.
I do better on my left leg than my right leg. Does that mean I’ll be half dead in 10 years?
even more odious and scary- if you cannot rub your head with one hand in a circular motion while patting your tummy with the other hand simultaneously, you will die a long, slow, painful death much earlier than those who can stand on one foot for ten seconds. If you can do both tests (rub/pat and stand on one foot) simultaneously while chewing gum, you’ll live to be 120....
I read it in a journal of quackery some time ago.
I can do this and hold a beer in one hand.
Took the test,
I’m going on 66 this year, and I was able to stand on one leg for the count of 30 seconds and could have kept on going.
I guess I passed my physical, so no need to pay a Dr to tell me I’m healthy.
More likely, the insurance company is going to ask you to stand on one leg for 60 seconds before they approve your life insurance policy.
I was crouched down and checking on the placement of a tile on my bathroom floor. Then I tipped over head first into the bathtub. Fortunately there was a contractors bag with soft stuff in it and I only bumped my shoulder a bit hard. It hurt for a couple of days. I will be 84 next month. I just tried the 10 second leg test. Counted seconds to 37 on my left foot, 17 and 10 seconds, 2 times on right foot. Time to eat brunch, low blood sugar.
Now, that’s funny!
