For adults with sepsis who are receiving vasopressor therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU), intravenous vitamin C is associated with an increased risk for a composite of death or persistent organ dysfunction at 28 days, according to a study published online June 15 in the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with the annual Critical Care Reviews Meeting, held from June 15 to 17 in Belfast.
François Lamontagne, M.D., from the Université de Sherbrooke in Canada, and colleagues conducted a trial in which 872 adults with sepsis who were receiving vasopressor therapy in the ICU were randomly assigned to an infusion of either vitamin C (435 patients) or matched placebo (437 patients).
The researchers found that the primary outcome (composite of death or persistent organ dysfunction on day 28) occurred in 44.5 and 38.5 percent of patients in the vitamin C and placebo groups, respectively (risk ratio, 1.21; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.04 to 1.40; P = 0.001). Death occurred in 35.4 and 31.6 percent of patients in the vitamin C and placebo groups, respectively, at day 28 (risk ratio, 1.17; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.98 to 1.40), and persistent organ dysfunction occurred in 9.1 and 6.9 percent, respectively (risk ratio, 1.30; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.83 to 2.05).
"This was an unexpected finding, and the secondary analyses—which included the evaluation of five biomarkers of tissue dysoxia, inflammation, and endothelial injury measured up to day seven—did not determine a putative mechanism for harm," the authors write.

It was nearly 16% worse with Vitamin C.
“but I wonder if they will find that the immune overreaction is not helped with the additional immune boosting from Vitamin C.”

That’s a good thought and it seems a valid question. I hope that’s something they look at.
How often are vasopressors given to those in sepsis?
Or, possibly, are they generally given at a specific timeframe / set of conditions during the progression of sepsis?
Vasopressors help you raise your blood pressure when it’s so low that you can’t get enough blood to your organs.
This is interesting because high IV doses of Vit C are recommended for people in hospitals with COVID.
Ehhh - I don’t dispute the findings but a 6% difference with a statistical error rate of 1% on just 400 people seems like a rather small difference to me.
Especially as we’re ignoring the sepsis areas and general health of the patients and ignoring the outcomes of the vitamin c group vs placebo (were those who didn’t die have shorter times in the hospital?)
My mom was given dopamine when she was in ER with dangerously low blood pressure.
riiiight. because we know big pharma IS the answer
Ok. So if I’m with sepsis and receiving vasopressor therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU) I’ll make sure I don’t get a Vitamin C drip. Thank you.
it’s got Electrolytes!
Vitamin C is the most overrated vitamin in history. Vitamin D is the best overall anti-oxidant, and B complex and zinc are best for fighting illness.
Sepsis or septicemia?
” associated with an increased risk for a composite of death “
Other than that, how is it?
This sounds fake to me. Dr. Paul Marik developed the popular Marik protocol for sepsis using vitamin C.
He is on the outs with the Medical Swamp because he developed successful COVID protocols that feature Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine.
it’s already well known by frontline doctors that iv vit c can damage tissue linings if given to agressively. gotta space it in problematic patients.
doesn’t change the antiviral/immunological efficacy of vit c one wit.
Dr. Paul Marik developed the popular Marik protocol for sepsis using vitamin C.

My 1st reaction to this was it was ht at Dr. Marik.
I suppose that this was done to undercut the HAT protocol for sepsis. Hydrcortisone, Ascorbic acid and Thiamin.
