A Florida family has come away from the disaster in Yellowstone with a deep appreciation for the people of Gardiner, Montana.
Mandy Callahan, a teacher from Bonifay, Florida, was on a long-planned trip to Yellowstone National Park with 13 other members of her family, and had spent five days exploring the area when disaster struck.
“We’ve had this trip booked for a year,” Callahan told Cowboy State Daily. “We took three of our children and their husbands, and five of our grandchildren, and my mother.”
Callahan said the family rented a large VRBO property in Gardiner, as well as four vehicles, with which they drove through most of Yellowstone the first few days of their trip. Then on Monday, the group decided to take a trip south to the Tetons.
“We went, and the north entrance was closed,” Callahan said. “And so we decided we would just hang out in Gardiner that day, thinking that it would open back up. We just didn’t realize the seriousness of it at that point.”

Stranded Florida Family Of 14 Stunned At Kindness Of Yellowstone-Area ResidentsContrary to the kindness of their neighbors in Florida?
Family of 14?
Spread across 4 generations.
East coasters learn about people in the heartland. Good story.
It’s how the West was won
“they were so nice. They said that later, they would take us to the train station”
“...they were so nice. They said that later, they would take us to the train station...”
I see what you did there, LOL!
How Wonderful!
Stories like this are why I still believe in the US and its people - despite all the horrible stories we hear.
Kudos to everyone involved, though a bit more situational awareness on the vacationers’ part is gently suggested in future.
For anyone else who doesn’t speak acronym...
A VRBO is a Vacation Home By Owner.
Guess it’s the editor’s day off up there.
Vacation Rental By Owner.
Like AirBnB, I guess...
It’s a good thing the Yellowstone folks didn’t take them to the train station, shoot them, and throw them over the edge.
The same kindness can be found in wyoming and South Dakota.
In the middle of nowhere wyoming, in the middle of the night i had a flat tire on my car.
I was changing it by the light of the stars when all at once
A woman with a flashlight appeared.
she certainly surprised me.
I never figured out where she came from
Probably your guardian angel.
VRBO was around years before Airbnb.
Don’t believe any of this. Montana is meth-head central. All those States are: Utah, Idaho, Wyoming. Terrible places. Stay away. California has plenty of parks. Go there.
Real Americans...
Sometimes people are nice. But usually not.
Seeing a family of eleven, eight boys in descending height order and dressed in suits, and a brand new new baby girl comfy in a portable car seat, every week now at Holy Mass. (You guessed right, this is NOT a Novus Ordo parish.)
Oldest is maybe sixteen. Mom and dad both looking less than forty. Mom was smiling after mass (everyone behaved themselves).
They do not appear to be planning a trip across the country to Yellowstone anytime soon. BUT, they could...theoretically! :^)
