Flying economy for any extended period of time is an experience usually endured rather than enjoyed, but one airplane seat designer reckons his design could revolutionize budget travel.
Alejandro Núñez Vicente's Chaise Longue Airplane Seat concept started small scale last year, as a college project for the then 21-year-old. A nomination in the 2021 Crystal Cabin Awards -- a top prize in the aviation industry -- swiftly followed, and the design became the focus of a flurry of online attention following a CNN Travel article.
Since then, Núñez Vicente's been making waves in the world of aviation. He's paused his master's degree to pursue the project full time. He's in talks with big-name airlines and seat manufacturing companies. He's been granted some hefty investment that's allowed the project to develop.
But while some marvel at Núñez Vicente's innovation, others recoil, concerned about claustrophobia and convinced sitting underneath someone else would be worse, not better, than the current airplane economy set-up.
"I grow more from listening to the critics and listening to the bad comments, than from listening to the good comments and the flowers that they throw me," says Núñez Vicente, speaking to CNN Travel in Hamburg, Germany, where he's showcasing his design at the 2022 Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX). His design is for the everyday traveler, so Núñez Vicente says he's keen to hear what would-be fliers have to say, positive or negative.
"My purpose here is to change the economy class seats for the better of humanity, or for all the people that cannot afford to pay for more expensive tickets," he says.

NO.
what next? Double Decker restrooms?
What a stupid f***ing idea.
Didn’t look very long but I couldn’t find it. You might have more luck... Several years ago there was a joke email sent around, complete with pictures, of the new “FedEx People Pak”, or something like that. It showed 6 foot tyvek padded envelopes big enough for one person. It was hilarious, with descriptions of how to order one and ship it, when you would arrive, and all kinds of details, as if it were serious. Kinda like a Babylon Bee article.
yesssss!!!!!
Bet the “inventor” has no history of flying much. He should be forced to sit in that seat for 6 hours at a time and see if it still works.
Why don’t they just freeze us cryogenically and stack us up like cargo?
I don’t know about passenger rooms below water line, but there are decks with people on them working. Like laundry, trash, etc.
However, I think that if the ship filled up to the normal water line, every one on the ship is goin’ under.
EXACTLY what I was going to say. Just the thought of it is nightmare material,
You’re welcome to buy a larger seat, a cabin or even your own private jet if you feel like spending more.
“What about a cruise ship in which the room is below waterline (aka no windows)?”
No cruise ship cabins are below the water line. Only the crew quarters
If you are in the lower innermost seat, and you have to get up to use the loo, it will be very difficult for everyone who sits closer to the aisle, whom you will have to dislodge, in order to get out and go. This is completely impractical.
That was my first thought.
Real engineers would have nixed this right away.
“It’s an entirely different kind of flying.....altogether.”
Bad move deregulating the airlines.
You knew...had to know...this is the main concern of everyone.
NOBODY wants to be that person where that silly young lady is sitting.
Your first (and too tardy) warning might be a high pitched “breeeeeeeeeeee” coming from the seat hinge in front of your face....
Not good.
