SAN DIEGO -- The notification that San Diego State was cutting its women's rowing program was delivered, like most bad news in 2020, in a Zoom meeting.
Madison Fisk sat at a desk in her bedroom in the off-campus house she shared with several teammates in November 2020 and listened to her coach explain that their scholarships -- if they had them -- would still be honored, but there would be no team for her senior season. There would be no races or regattas, no team bus rides, no 5 a.m. sunrise workouts

Ok, I’ll start. Soooo, ESPN posts a glowing article about women’s courageous fight to attain equality under Title IX. Yet, if these same women were being replaced, should I say displaced, by transgender athletes would ESPN shed the same tear?
It’s a Tuesday and it’s raining so it must be “Defend Title IX” day. But if it’s a Friday and we are swimming at UPENN, it’s “shut up you bigoted jerks” day.
Never mind that ESPN and the rest spend their time unwittingly (yeah right) tearing down Title IX. Move on.
It’s time for NORMALS to walk away from college sports
What they should do is just have a woman’s team, but allow anyone that is even thinking about identifying as a woman to be on the team. Then pick the best athletes.
Ahhh! The new "N" word! Careful; you'll trigger those who are NOT!
I was looking for why the program was being eliminated. Per NBC 7 San Diego...
“According to Wicker and de la Torre, a number of factors — including financial sustainability and gender equity — prompted the decision.
“The need to realign the student-athlete population to more closely resemble the overall institution gender composition was a leading factor,” their letter says. “The current financial impacts created by the COVID-19 pandemic prompted an evaluation of our sports portfolio with an eye towards the long-term success for our various sports and how to financially sustain that success.”
Starting in 2021-22, SDSU will support a dozen sports for women and six sports for men with participation rates that “closely align with the gender composition of the university’s full-time undergraduate enrollment.”
“a dozen sports for women and six for men”...sheesh...a dozen sounds like ribbon gymnastics, or underwater basketweaving are included.
IOW
You don’t bring in bucks. Football does
With the call being made in 2020, Covid itself could have been reason enough for there to be no senior season in her sport.
Since she loves rowing, she can now join an elitist rowing club that competes against other elitist rowing clubs. The membership will probably cost less than tuition, if that’s all she was going to school for...
I could care less! Title IX is a disaster for collegiate sports.
In the past sports prepared men for battle, hence women were engaged in other things, or so the story goes.
This doesn’t bode well for future armed conflicts.
“a dozen sports for women and six for men”.
So...if the school is aligning shorts team’s numbers with the general school gender population...does that mean there are 2 females to every male on campus? Boy, did I go to the wrong college.
Of course, there could be “ringers” on both sides of the school’s gender equation. CAREFUL who you ask for a date! Evidence of, or lack of, an Adam’s Apple should be the first physical trait to be considered.
It’s a known problem that only 40% of US college is male, and falling. And in the UK it’s even worse: 30% and falling. Yes my 3 college educated boys found steady girlfriends in college easily. The gender imbalance is troubling for society. At this rate the majority of physicians, surgeons, professionals, scientists, lawyers etc will be women. And since women like to date/marry at a similar educational level, there will be societal trouble ahead (more than there already is).
I reduced my following of NCAA sports to my alma mater’s baseball team and this past season I didn’t even do that.
I had no clue. Thanks!
The reason is that football has so many more people on the team. It has to be 50/50 ratio. So if you have 200 men in sports, you have to have 200 women in sports.
