‘Slowpoke’ law leading to citations for some South Carolina drivers

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.

The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.

“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Major league JERK you say? I have been called much worse, by some far better than you.
Doesn’t take much to trigger some folks.
Now let me use my left turn signal and get in front of you again.

In that case, you are supposed to move to the right when a faster moving car is coming up behind you so they can pass.

The point of that law [Move Over or Slow Down] is to give cops some breathing room as they write some poor slob a ticket.

They hate being on the shoulder as traffic screams by at 70 mph just inches away.

Officer writing tickets on the shoulder is a contributing issue and needs to be stopped. Either follow them to the next exit or rest area, or send them the summons in the mail. Let them sort it out safely online or in a courtroom.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police release a video called "Your Vest Won't Stop This Bullet". It shows the danger that cops, the driver and occupants who were pulled over, and other passing drivers face every time a cop pulls someone over. Emergency stops are one thing, revenue raising is another. For years it was only available to law enforcement and state DOTs because if enough people saw this video, issuing tickets on the shoulder would stop.

I have a cousin who stays left lane always, drives the posted speed and then rails about people passing him from the right lane. He calls them dangerous drivers.

I tell him blocking the left lane is much more likely to cause an accident but he says I’m driving the speed limit and won’t hear of it.

I’ve always been of the opinion that roads with 2 lane are designed for speed limit and entry/exit in the right lane - passing and speeders (often cops not on a call) in the left.

3 lane roads should be the same for the far left lane, but the middle lane for speed limit driving and the right lane for entry/exit and limited speed vehicles (such as a car with the donut tire that is limited to 45mph etc).

That being said I’ve been putting in about 25 hours of driving a week for the past month and 1/2 going back and forth from Ohio to the East coast for a project. I have seen maybe a handful of people in all that time actually driving the speed limit....not even sure why we bother except the govt needs revenue

I most always drive the limit, if not less.

All you need to do is consider something like the Autobahn where there is no speed limit. Everyone had better stay to the right if they’re the slowest, or middle if they’re faster but stay the h*ll out of the fast lane unless you’re passing. Even then you have to consider approaching vehicles that might be doing 180mph. Germans get very angry when people don’t follow the rules because it literally puts lives at risk.

I was reading an article about some VERY small town in the south that tickets people for the smallest infraction - including timing them with a stopwatch if they are more that 2 minutes in the left hand lane.

Then they find all other sorts of infractions.

The judge comes around once a month - the line wraps around outside city hall for people that try to contest the tickets.

No. Officially, it may be called the passing lane but really it is the through lane. The speed limit (70 mph in SC, IIRC) is just the down payment on how fast you are really going to go to play with that crowd. BTW, the concept of “safe following distance” is pretty much out the window.

I agree that drivers in SC intent on driving no faster than the speed limit should drive in the right hand lane due to the hazard discussed in the article:

“‘Most people who are in that left lane, they’re going at least the speed limit and they can run up on you.’ Hovis said. ‘There’s not any break light showing, no turn signals.’”

True. But part of the problem is the speedsters who want to drive as fast as they can in ALL THE LANES - not just the left hand through lane.

I live in South Carolina, and that cracks me up that I’m supposed to drive in the right hand lane? That’s where most of the pot holes are. They are horrible here.

To drive in the right hand lane and not damage your alignment, you have to slow down below the poste speed limit even more.

No wonder everyone drives (fast, slow and in between) in the left hand lane. It’s the lane with the least number of pot holes.

Bunching up cars creates dangerous situations with so many others in blind spots. Enforcing the left lane for passing opens up the spacing.

I am in the habit of moving to the left lane when approaching on/off ramps to permit easier merging for the entering traffic and to avoid braking for those exiting. I'll merge back to the right when it is safe to do so. Sometimes that takes a fair distance, but if you come screaming up on my bumper at 90 when I'm already over the limit at 75 or so, do not expect me to speed up or merge unsafely. Wait your turn.
