So much for serve and protect.
L
Serving and protecting is one thing. But ain’t no way no cop is going to get his uniform all wet.
Without knowing how good swimmers these cops were, I cannot fault them for not going into the water after him.
Castle Rock vs Gonzales
LEOs have no Duty to Protect.
Judgment call.
I can’t fault the officers.
Legally meaningless, wildly outdated.
A better, and more honest one would be "To Oppress and Go Home."
Remember, these are the guys who will be confiscating your guns. They will be the face at your front door, and the ones who will shoot your dog. "Only following Orders."
They might say, "Sorry!" After.
I agree with the sentiment that the “protect and serve” role of police officers has become an antiquated notion, but jumping in and trying to save someone who is drowning will likely get you killed unless you are well-trained for the situation.
The headline and overall tone of the article was written as a hit piece against the officer.
They told the guy to NOT go in......he did it anyway.
As far as I’m concerned that qualifies as attempting to both serve AND protect.....he refused to listen....that’s on him.
I’ve had a rule of thumb for a long time, it goes something like this:
If I tell someone their hair is on fire and the give me the middle finger.....I say let it burn.
I wouldn’t have gone in either....and I was a Lake Michigan life guard.
They serve smart people not people dumb enough to get themselves in a jam. Because everyone is so smart, especially them, and smart people never behave recklessly, especially not them.
Save Yourself, Dummy.
Our cops :)
What kind of drugs were in this guys system. Fool.
“So much for serve and protect.”
Ridiculous, no, downright idiotic.
An LEO equipment belt is equivalent to a divers weight belt. and in no case should any said officer need to subject him/herself to extreme lethal danger in order “serve and protect” someone who decides to drown himself.
Their new motto
SCOTUS has ruled that the police have NO obligations to protect the citizen. It would appear that they have no obligations to save a citizen.
Just saying
