"To Serve and Protect" is a marketing slogan, like "New and Improved" or "Family Size!"

Legally meaningless, wildly outdated.

A better, and more honest one would be "To Oppress and Go Home."

Remember, these are the guys who will be confiscating your guns. They will be the face at your front door, and the ones who will shoot your dog. "Only following Orders."

They might say, "Sorry!" After.

Hypothetically speaking... lotsa stuff.

Reading rescue swimmer manuals, does not approve responding solo to a distressed swimmer. Unless there are rescue devices at hand. It is ill advised.

Of course the press knows nothing about actually responding unless with camera in hand and in the way... so there’s that.
