I saw this before on Blazing Saddles, the quicksand scene. Never thought I’d see it for real.
Cops are law enforcement, not life guards. They shouldn’t have to jump into lakes (or run into burning buildings, before anyone asks) particularly to save people who went in of their own accord.
So they were put on .. vacation?
If you are not trained in life guarding, you risk your own life by trying to save someone drowning. I don’t blame them, maybe they couldn’t even swim themselves!
50 50 ...bottom line is the voluntary jump into the water would make anyone apprehensive about saving him. At the same time it’s more proof that cops are more interested in their hair gel and dating apps now. Saving the man might be also considered toxic masculinity.
I’m a police officer not a lifeguard, bro.
Cop needed to say “I can’t swim.”
Did the oinkster just move from Uvalde, Texas?
If you’re a cop, and you can swim, you HAVE signed on for saving the lives of drowning suicide victims AND perhaps, taking a bullet in an effort to SAVE LIVES!
Can’t speak to US cop salaries, but Calgary cops START at $68K /year, rising to $104K /year, after 5 years. Not a bad salary, starting out, especially after a 2 year community College programme.
Of course, with how so many of the authorities (at least in Canada) ignored basic laws and civil rights, most of the good cops took early retirement. Most of the ones that are left, have little integrity, it’s all about a good paycheck and avoiding ALL risk. No wonder that ‘Barney’ chose to just let the guy die.
Big deal!
Since we know that cops won’t exert the slightest effort to save 20-chidren from death, why would we expect them to exert themselves to save a homeless guy...
I’m more surprised that they didn’t shoot at him as he swam away and then turn and shoot the woman...
He needed a lifeguard and a psychiatrist not a cop 🤪
In this case I am kind of torn.
He jumped in, refused to come out, could swim, did not make any attempt to go to where he could hang on until rescued.
I guess my question is were there no ropes or floats they could have tossed to him?
If you are not a trained lifeguard, you may very well drown in an attempt to save someone else. And if that person is suicidal, even a trained lifeguard is liable to be drowned.
Guy was a retard likely druggie. No tears behind this keyboard.
I’d throw him a roll of Lifesavers if I thought it could help.
We had a Worcester cop die last year trying to save some drowning youths who should have been in school. It was terribly sad, and unnecessary.
One less criminal.
WAIT.
The deceased represented to Officers that he could swim; he told them he was going “for a swim.”
He set out well enough that it appeared he actually could swim.
It was only some ways out that it became apparent that he could NOT swim well enough.
At that point, absent water rescue equipment, and training on using it, there’s NO WAY I’ll fault either Officer for not attempting a rescue:
A. Drowning people pose a mortal danger to their rescuers.
B. Doubly so at night.
C. The lake’s “NO SWIMMING” signage may well indicate submerged hazards.
D. Submerged hazards are doubly dangerous at night.
E. Nighttime water rescues are inherently more precarious.
NOT faulting police on this one. Not EVEN.
Without floaties, the drowning guy would have likely brought the cop down with him.
Anything from the Washington Post is suspect to me.
I can’t believe some of the comments on this thread... Some of these people sound exactly like liberals.
No way can it be the fkn idiots fault who disregarded the cops instructions, it’s the cops fault!! “Because he didn’t want to get his uniform wet”??
