Joanna Jones, 39, was flying to London from Antigua when her 14-year-old daughter Poppy needed oxygen and two EpiPen shots during the nightmare eight-hour flight after suffering a severe reaction to the nuts.

As Poppy's condition worsened, a quick-thinking nurse on board dashed to help - while the captain considered making an emergency landing.

Eventually the pilot landed the plane safely at Gatwick and Poppy was rushed to hospital.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Joanna said: ’It was a nightmare for all of us and I really thought she might die.

I generally don’t go down that aisle. If I’m accidentally exposed I immediately walk away. I might have a bad headache for a bit if I decided to stick around for some reason.

Would you board a plane knowing such molecules were present?

First sentence:

EXCLUSIVE: Girl, 14, with severe nut allergy nearly died aboard BA flight after passenger ‘refused to stop eating peanuts despite TWICE being told by cabin crew he was putting the teenager’s life at risk’

So he had already *STARTED* eating the peanuts *BEFORE* he was told? At that point, why would it matter much? Wasn't the peanut aroma already out in the air?

Anyone *THAT* sensitive (if that's even real) should be wearing a space suit when they go out in public.

“who knows if she was having a reaction to the jerk’s peanuts or peanut dust from a previous flight?”

Ding ding. Winner. Her tray and or seat could have had lots of peanut dust already. Many people put the empty bag in the magazine holder on the back of the seat

the air system in the plane is like the one in your car that evenly distributes the air throughout the plane.

we were just witness to a some similarly boorish, selfish patrons
this, at a major Broadway theatrical show and in the expensive seating area

patrons were advised ahead of performance not to place any open drinks on railing because if they spill, they can short out the electrical system and may cause a fire (as well as fall on patrons in the orchestra section below)

one party kept putting his drink on the rail ... FIVE TIMES after the matron advised him to remove it (who was very diligent, could make a good camp commandante if she learned how to stop being so courteous, ha!)

five times he just deided to be a self-centered pig and to hell with everyone else’s comfort or safety

not just once or twice like maybe he forgot

nobody else felt it necessary to place their drinks on the railing, only this one “entitled” boor

we heard that the theatre will stop selling him tickets... but of course that will be an ineffective remedy since he can always get tickets under someone else’s name

This is *their* danger, they need to take whatever steps are necessary to protect themselves no matter what anyone else does.

———————————————————

They did take the necessary steps to protect themselves. They forbade passengers on the airplane from eating peanuts. One passenger ignored the warnings and commands and deliberately placed that child’s life in danger. That passenger should be arrested and charged with attempted murder.

There do seem to be some who think that anything that inconveniences them is an assault on Rights and Freedom in general.

How about just not being a dick and not eating your f*&%ing peanuts for a few hours?

So you simply accept at face value the claim that someone is so sensitive to peanuts that merely being on the same plane with someone eating peanuts represents a threat to their life?

I'm not sure I believe this claim. How does such a person survive to adulthood?

If this is true, and at that point the man had only the word of the mother that this is in fact true, then shouldn't that person who is so sensitive to peanuts that they might die, take it upon themselves to make sure they never get accidentally exposed to the odor of peanuts?

Also, someone upthread mentioned that peanut allergies can be eliminated by a medical process. It would seem rational that people should do this rather than take such risks in their lives.

I know if I had a chance of dying from smelling something which is quite ubiquitous, I believe I would undergo the treatment or I would stay away from crowds.

You can't tell everyone in a mall or a store that you will die if you smell peanuts. It isn't practical.

I love arm chair detectives and psychiatrists. If you hurry, I think there is an episode of Quincy on TV soon.

That’s fine.

But would it not have been much safer to simply ask the parents not to board the flight?

If so sensitive, putting away what was once already opened would still be dangerous.

It’s the parent that initiated the risk here.

And that might even be what the guy with the peanuts was thinking - “Really!?! Then how did you make it through the airport?”

If they had shown up with requisite protection, which would be needed if the sensitivity claim is true, then maybe the guy would’ve realized it was indeed serious and complied.

Why was the girl not wearing an N95 mask and latex gloves? If anyone on the plane has a peanut or shellfish allergy, the whole plane has to not eat peanut or a shrimp entree?

“bend to their conditions”??? Just how hard are you going to have to bend to not eat peanuts for a few hours?

So what's wrong with wearing a mask for a few hours, you know, to "flatten the curve"?

As a teenager, I knew someone that allergic. She would have spontaneous anaphylactic attacks. She always carried epinephrine and a syringe and used them more than a little.

Peanut allergies cannot be completely eliminated through desensitization. The person has to be within a specific immune response range to even be considered a candidate.

Or maybe you are a sap.

Did you ever stop to wonder why the parent would bring such a sensitive kid onboard knowing bags had already been opened?

Your limitation is critical thinking.
