Americans are being urged to stop using any of 285,000 adult portable bed rails after the deaths of at least three people who suffocated after becoming caught in one of 10 models of the product.
The bed rails were manufactured and sold by Mobility Transfer Systems from 1992 to 2021 and by Metal Tubing USA in 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday. Neither company has agreed to recall the beds or offer a remedy to consumers, according to the agency.
At least three people died after becoming entrapped in the products, including a 78-year-old woman in a Michigan assisted-living facility in 2006, an 85-year-old man in an Oklahoma nursing home in 2007 and a 90-year-old disabled woman in California in 2013.

I wonder if there are any elderly people the administration is particularly concerned about?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is out of control (and other agencies).
I’ve been on the hunt for a corded roll up blind for the side of my house and discovered they essentially mandated all blinds be ‘cordless’ because a handful of children were choking on them every year. At 15 feet off the ground, I MUST have a corded blind, or fork out for something electric (or fab it).
I’m shocked that homes still have bathtubs in the current environment, let alone that kiddie pools are still legal. /s
Bed rails that have resulted in 3 deaths get banned. A vaccine that killed 23000 does not.
Can anyone write an intelligible headline any more? does everything have to have more than one interpretation?
” discovered they essentially mandated all blinds be ‘cordless’ because a handful of children were choking “
IIRC, we found that out about 25 years ago.
They’re going to make peanut butter illegal soon, I expect.
all of them died in homes with 24 hour care..
maybe it’s not the rail that is the problem?
Busywhiskers beat me to it.
Updated VAERS Report?
The vaccines have probably killed many more than that.
Time to ban bed rails. Safety first.
“Feds...blamed for at least 3 deaths”
I’d blame them for at least 3 million. Maybe 30 million.
Oh brother. Sorry but three deaths of people who could probably hardly move doesn’t warrant this kind of action.
When I realized I’d been regulated out of purchasing a product feature (because I’m not 12 feet tall), I began a deep dive; I wasn’t happy.
National Survey Finds Vast Majority of Consumers are Aware of Strangulation Risk Posed by Certain Corded Window Coverings
The destroyer I was on had portable bed rails you could put on the rack when the sea was rough. They called them sissy bars.
This site says you can custom order corded blinds...

Thanks for that!
I did determine the ‘custom’ loophole but hadn’t yet sourced anything. Hopefully they can provide an exterior product that I need for a fair price, otherwise I’ll just have to make the ‘stock’ ones electric.
Shameful, really.
