With rumors swirling about China invading Taiwan, it’s worth thinking about the CCP’s strengths and weaknesses.
The majority of Taiwanese don’t identify themselves as Chinese according to a 2020 Pew Research survey. This is consistent with other polls showing that people in Taiwan increasingly identify only as Taiwanese. Xi Jinping, though, doesn’t care. His political ambition to bring Taiwan into the Chinese fold is the most influential factor in China’s policy over Taiwan—but even Xi’s ambitions may be insufficient when measured against the practical realities arrayed against him.
A leaked memo from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in March 2022 suggested that Xi was planning an imminent attack against Taiwan. To that end, Xi instructed family members of senior CCP officials to sell all overseas assets to avoid inevitable Western sanctions. On May 24, a leaked audio clip revealed the CCP’s top brass discussing the Taiwan invasion plan. This was the first-ever recording of a Chinese military leadership gathering.
Taking advantage of Taiwan’s open society, the CCP’s military espionage activities have flourished since 2000. In the past decade, at least 21 serving or retired Taiwanese officers with the rank of captain or above have been convicted of spying for China.
In 2021, Taiwanese courts convicted two men who’d revealed President Tsai Ing-wen’s security details. Shortly after that, a retired lieutenant colonel was found guilty of building espionage networks for Beijing. Then, three high-ranking men in the Military Intelligence Bureau went on trial for allegedly recruiting spies for China.
According to retired Taiwanese Lt Commander Lu Li-shih, Beijing has infiltrated almost all military ranks in Taiwan. Chinese intelligence first approaches the targeted officers with lavish gifts and holidays and then offers huge payments for information. After the first few exchanges, they start blackmailing them for more information, with less payment.

Everyone is taking advantage of Biden’s weakness.
The practical reality is that China would win. Taiwan is nearly indefensible.
Also, Ukraine is screwed if Putin decides to go all in. So is Eastern Europe. South Korea too, if China and Russia back little Kim.
China would be foolish to take Taiwan first, which is why I do not believe they will. They would take America first, and then Taiwan falls into their lap. China has been at war with the U.S. for decades. The only president who saw this was DJT.
Yup. Now is the time for the evil leaders to act with Braindead in “power “.
Not to be picky but is Biden weak when considering the South China Sea?
I suspect that the American military is on top of the Taiwan situation.
There is first of all the Quad. That is a non-treaty alliance between I think USA, Australia, India and Japan. The stated purpose is to deter China. Collectively, they have mounted a strong South China Sea naval presence.
Then there are several others peripheral but active players including the Netherlands, the Philippines, Korea, Indonesia and I believe Singapore. There may even be others who have an interest in preventing the Chinese takeover of Taiwan.
The US Navy is active in the South China sea to the extent some might say is provocative. America has reestablished Navy presence in the Philippines. There is a small Philippine island with little there except a recently refurbished air strip and American jets.
So, has a weak Biden just allowed all this to happen? Or, has it developed absent his intervention?
I am of course not a Biden supporter and the actions in the South China Sea seem atypical
A lot of people are going to die a lot of expensive military equipment well go to the bottom of the ocean.
For what ego.
Correct
I’m not sure how China plans to move nearly a half million men across the straits without incurring massive casualties. This ain’t 1944.
I’m not sure how anyone could stop them. They don’t care about casualties, at least in the near-term.
Missiles are cheap, plentiful and mobile.
You can’t take territory unless you land enough troops, then feed & supply them.
Yeah, the current leadership did such a great job in Afghanistan. They are all over it.
Once China is on Taiwan, they will never be displaced. I expect it to be a lightning move.
nice three gorges dam you got there Xi, be a shame if sumpting were to happen to it...
China has been at war with the U.S. for decades. The only president who saw this was DJT.
And after tariffs and a an imminent trade deal, favorable to the USA, Covid was released….
True that, and I suspect that will be their source of opening attack upon America. Only this one will be a far more deadly bioweapon. It’s a form of weapon that gives them a degree of deniability that they were the source, plus it makes the U.S. fight against that, as well as, them when they launch their full scale attack when enough people have gotten infected. Something like a viral enhanced hemorrhagic fever?
If the Chinese are smart (and they are), they would rather attack with an ally in the Whitehouse instead of waiting for Trump’s return.
Some people forget about the Korean war and what happened at the Chosen.
Our boys were in full retreat and most were dang lucky to have made it out alive.
Yet here we are. “Experts” are on here claiming that the Red Chinese cant take that little island because it would cost massive casualties.
They can lose the total population of this country and still have over 900 million left.
