Vanity: Question to Fans of TV Series Blacklist.
Me ^ | 5/27/22 | Me

Posted on 05/27/2022 4:50:09 AM PDT by Don@VB

My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed the television series Blacklist, and I would recommend this nine season action thriller to anyone who enjoyed the likes of "24" or "Designated Survivor". My one question to Blacklist fans: When night, or dark environment scenes are playing, does it appear too dark, almost impossible to perceive? I adjusted all my TV settings to no avail. Any input appreciated!

It’s just your eyesight. Full disclaimer, I have never watched the show, but I have experienced that same thing on other shows. 🙂

We have the same problem on a lot of shows when watching while the sunlight is still coming in the room. The room is just not dark enough.

Chalk it up to bad photography, or they desire to keep it dark because the script lacked real substance at that point. What irritates me is back ground sound tracks that obliterates scenes that one is sure contained some kind of important dialog. 🙂

I’ve tried eliminating background light, but no improvement. And.. yes background music and other sounds cloak the dialog so it’s hard to understand.

In my mind the described condition is the current director’s style. The director is trying to keep up to date with other directors and is riding the dark bandwagon

Dark is ubiquitous.

Sometimes dark scenes don’t come through high compression / low bit rate video streams. This can depend on whether it is a recorded / “on demand” vs live feed, of a popular vs unpopular show, on cable vs internet.

“There is nothing wrong with your television. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are now controlling the transmission. We control the horizontal and the vertical. We can deluge you with a thousand channels or expand one single image to crystal clarity and beyond. We can shape your vision to anything our imagination can conceive.”

Dust/clean your TV screen (using only manufacturer-approved cleaners!).

We also have to deal with 2-year old grandkid hand prints.

Seriously...yes...there are times when the screen is frustratingly dark during programs. Don’t watch Blacklist, but other programs. A recent series on Netflix - Outer Range - was railed on by many of the reviewers as almost totally black/dark very often. Even I had to adjust the “contrast” and switch thru the various modes...sports, movie, nighttime, etc...to find the best viewing mode. Didn’t help.

I haven’t seen the show, but I have seen shows where the photography is just too dark to tell what’s going on. It’s not your fault.

Also, the music and the dialog levels can be poor. British television tends to have very poor audio.

That’s TV these days.

The shows are produced at the highest possible resolution and refresh rate. Unless you have a TV that was purchased with the same high resolution and refresh rate (and the cable or satellite system to support it) you will get bad results.

The image will appear “muddy.” You will loose the tiny differences in lights in the shadows, making them a murky blob.

Watched the Outer Limits every opportunity when I was a kid in the early ‘60s.

The lighting is probably in James Spader's contract to hide his aging.

Also, I never had the Darkness Problem when watching The Outer Limits back in the ‘60s.

I am a big fan of the show and I’ve never noticed the darkness. And I’m normally very sensitive and critical of that and otherwise lousy directing.

Since you are a fan of the show, perhaps you can answer this question - is Red really Elizabeth’s father? Seems there was that sense in earlier episodes, then there was “retcon” into the answer being “no.”

That old show in the 60s scared the daylight out of me when I was a child.
