This is a question for my fellow Freepers: I have a Ukrainian family living here in Annapolis, Maryland with me. We crossed the border with Mexico at Tijuana in April. One person has a tourist visa issued by the U.S. Consulate in Ukraine. The other two were issued "Humanitarian Visas" by the Department of Homeland Security at the border.
We applied for human services benefits through Maryland Gov. for food stamps etc.
We applied for Social Security cards for two of our people so that they could apply for work in area businesses (both are college educated and speak acceptable English).
The answer in both cases was the same. Because these are "Humanitarian Visas" and not "Refugee Visas" they are precluded from working or receiving benefits from Social Services.
My question to fellow Freepers is this: Have any of you had this same experience and if so, what did you do about it.
Humble thanks
If you want to bring these people into the U.S., then pay for their free sh!t out of your own pocket.
basically you’re asking Freepers how to help foreign visitors get more welfare?
Just effing wow.
They should be in Ukraine defending their homes instead of coming here expecting us to support them.
+1
Jimmy Valentine, did you write this and is it an actual first hand account?
If so, you’re a dumba$$. If they need money so bad how the hell did they get to Mexico so they could ILLEGALLY enter the USA? And why in the EFF is the American taxpayer obligated to pay for anything?
As if the 100k or more of Afghani savages and the millions more coming over the border aren’t enough.
Although it should come at no surprise that our resident Putin bots lack basic ENGLISH reading comprehension.
What’s absolutely consistent throughout recent history is:
all US Deep State wars guarantees a flood of refugees into the United States and the West - from Vietnam to Somalia to Afghanistan to Ukraine. EVERY.SINGLE.ONE.
Every neocon deep-state military operation since WWII has absolutely 3 guaranteed outcomes:
- military failure
- massive increases in spending and debt
- a flood of refugees into the West.
One would think people would notice the pattern by now.
In this case, one of the people who should be noticing the pattern is actually complicit in perpetuating the problem.
State services are paid for by state tax payers and only avail to state citizens.
You should try to get federal handouts (because the federal government can print money out of thin air).
Another option is to go to a charity or church or maybe a local food bank.
No, three people crossed, one with a tourist visa, the other two with humanitarian visas. They all came into the country legally, but cannot stay her indefinitely.
The tourist visa will eventually run out, and I'm not sure how long the humanitarian visas are good for, but they'll run out eventually as well.
Then all three can return to Ukraine and apply at a U.S. Consulate for permanent residency visas, and wait like the rest of the people who immigrate here legally.
so you want tips on how to steal from the American people and for human smuggling?
This looks like a political scam.
Jimmy Valentine is a provocateur.
EVERYTHING you say can and will be used against Free Republic.
This might be a question for an immigration lawyer.
I will say, with my familiarity with this, is that welfare was completely prohibited and a family member had to show proof they had the income to cover for the immigrant.
Work permits from the Federal Government are needed for them to legally work. If they are being processed to be legal residents (not citizens), then that work permit can come within a month to month and a half. Again, no welfare was allowed.
Hope this helps.
Then why did they come across the Mexican boarder? I’ll tell you why, because they came illegally. This corrupt government gave them a visa so they could release them, just like they are doing with 15k other illegals every day. Then these illegal aliens have the nerve to ask for free crap. Call me what you want, but I say anyone who supports, or participates in this should be set adrift in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
They’re probably not going to qualify as refugees because there are too many intervening countries between the Ukraine and the US that would have accepted them as refugees, like Poland or Romania. If they decided to skip over those countries and come here, then they aren’t refugees.
Humanitarian visas I assume means essentially that they are charity cases, and so they will probably need to reach out to some private charities for assistance.
When my daughter brought over her Danish husband (at the time fiance), she had to sign paperwork attesting that he would not go on government assistance.
I don’t see why these Ukrainians should have any special privileges above that.
If you brought them here then they’re your responsibility.
