The dazzling meteor burned up over the south west of England just after midnight on Thursday, with sightings in South Wales, Hertfordshire and West Sussex.
UK Meteor Network (UKMON), which runs a network of 153 detection cameras recording meteors and fireballs over the UK, said the fireball was picked up by fifteen of its cameras at 00:39 BST (23:39 GMT).
Over 250 members of the public also reported the event through UKMON's website, after capturing images and footage on their dashcams and video doorbells.
Several reports claimed the fireball had a green colour, which may point to the composition of the meteoroid, suggesting it has higher magnesium content, according to UKMON.

re-entry of something made from copper?
I saw a GREEN meteorite in 1981. The cool part was that its path was almost parallel with the ground. But it was daytime and a very intense, bright green color.
For those interested, watch The Unexplained Green Fireballs by Richard Nolan.....
Richard Dolan, my bad.
No mention of sonic booms. I thought there would be. To high in the atmosphere I suppose?
The next day, I read that it actually landed in North Carolina.
Not to worry, just Harry and Megan flaming out.
I saw a GREEN meteorite in 1976 one sunrise at the rifle range on Camp LeJeune, NC.
It was huge and beautiful.................
It’s the Loc-Nar. This is exactly how the movie Heavy Metal began.
Somewhere in a stack of papers I have a chart showing the different colors associated with the content of a meteor.
Streaking was a crazy fad from the 70’s. You can’t get away with anything these days. Too many cameras.
Green fireballs in the US southwest became part of UFO lore back in the 50s. Edwin Ruppelt discussed them in his classic book, “The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects.”
Probably nickel-bearing. Nickel produces a green flame and is pretty common in meteorites. Some of the best steels of ancient times were made from from nickel-bearing meteorites. They didn’t know metallurgy from shinola but nickel is one of the more common elements added to pure iron to produce modern steels.
Copper also produces a green flame but it’s usually only present in meteorites in trace amounts.
Thank God. If this happened 1000 years ago, hundreds of Saxon virgins would have been sacrificed to appease the gods.
